IMPROVEMENT IN MOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,953, dated December 17, 1878; application filed October 24, 1878.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: lvICCARTHY, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The nature of this invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement in one implement of a scrubbing-brush, a sponge or other suitable article for absorbing and retaining water, a rubber or elastic scraper, and a device for expressing or wringing the water out of the sponge or its equivalent, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of my invention when in position for bringing the scrubbing-brush in use. Fig. 2 shows its function as a scraper and drier. Fig. 3 illustrates the means and mode of expressing the water out of the sponge. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the mop head with the wringer applied to the sponge, and Fig. 5 a front view of the same with the wringer removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
To the end of a handle similar to that of an ordinary mop is attached a trough-shaped head, formed of two plates, A and A, joined at one edge nearly or quite at right angles to each other, and braced by metallic bands or plates 12, extended across the ends. In the trough of the head A is secured the sponge S, or a cloth, by means of a rod, 0', passing through the same, and engaging at its ends with apertures or slots in the metallic end pieces of the head.
To the rear free edge of the plate A of the head is hinged a brush, I), which, when required for use, is swung forward and retained in that position by a strap, -s, on the front of the plate A, engaging a button on the brush, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing.
hen not wanted for use, the brush is thrown back out of the aforesaid position, and
secured by a strap, 8, attached to the handle of the mop,as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The plate A of the head is made concave or centrally depressed on the side adjacent to the sponge, and along the free edge of said plate is attached a segmental or deflected rubber strip, 0, forming an elastic scoop, which, when used as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, draws the water toward the center of the mop, and thus collects it from the floor and conveys it to the sponge, by which it is absorbed and retained.
d is a block, of suitable form and dimensions to allow it to enter the trough of the head and compress the sponge. The said block is attached to the back of the head by flexible bands 6, of sufficient length to allow the block to be carried around the head and applied to the sponge S, as illustrated in Fi 3 of the drawing, when, by bearing upon the handle it, attached to the block d, the water can be expressed from the sponge. The trough of the head is provided with an aperture, a, for the escape of the water, as indicated by an rows in the aforesaid figure.
hen either the brush or scraper is in use, the wringing-block d is carried back of the head, and retained there by a clasp, f, on the handle of the mop engaging the handle it of the block, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
It will be observed that by the peculiar arrangement of the sponge with the brush and segmental elastic scraper in the manner described, the sponge is made to serve two functions-viz, that of a supplier of water to the brush, and of a drier or an absorbent of the water gathered by the segmental or deflected scraper.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The mop-head constructed of the plates A A, as described, the sponge S, secured in the cavity of said head, the brush 1), hinged to the free edge of plate A, and the rubber strip 0 on the free edge of plate A, all constructed and combined substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
2. The brush 1), hinged to the rear edge of the mop-head, and provided with means for retaining it in either a forward or a rearward position, substantially as specified and shown.
3. The mop-head formed of the plates A A, e, and provided with handle h, and the clasp joined at one edge at an angle to each other, f, attached to the handle of the mop, substanthe plate A having its inner face concave or tially as described and shown. centrally depressed, and provided on the free In testimony whereof I have hereunto set edge of said face Witha segmental or deflected my hand this 19th day of October, 1878.
rubber strip, for the purpose of collecting the JOHN MCCARTHY. water, substantially as specified. Witnesses:
4. In combination with a mop-head, the O. BENDIXEN, wringer 1, attached thereto by flexible bands J. JOHNSON.
