Description
UNITED STATES PA'I'EN JOHN NEILL, OF ST.
JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTING-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,801, dated December 1 0, 1878 application filed September 14, 1878.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J onn NEILL, of St. J oseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Flntinglrons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the standand tinting-roller; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention has relation to improvements in flirting-irons.
The object of the invention is to devise a fluter upon which the goods being once laid need not be removed until the fiuting is completed, and to improve such machines generally, so as to produce perfect work at a small expense of time and labor.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a flutin g-iron having a hollow corrugated roller, provided with a heating-billet, and a fiutingplate, corrugated on its under side and recessed upon its upper side, for the reception of a heating-plate, said flirting-plate being provided with a suitable handle, and adapted to be used in conjunction with the corrugated roller, as hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A. designates the base of my improved rioting-iron,
' composed of two side pieces or blocks, a, united by the eross-pieces I). B represents a longitudinally-corrugated roller, the rabbeted ends iof which have their bearings c in the side pieces a. This roller is prevented from endwise displacement when in use by the shoulders d, and, as shown in Fig. 2,, is hollow. Inside of the roller is a metallic billet, G, that, being properly heated, communicates a fluting temperature to the roller, and when cooled may be drawn out, reheated, and replaced, the same being prevented from being pushed out of the roller by a stop, d, at one end of the bore thereof. This roller may be of any desired size and length, according to the material to be fluted.
In practice, the cross-bars b will have a spur or spurs projecting therefrom to support the flirting-iron when not in use. When not used in fiutin g the roller may be removed from the stand or base, and the latter utilized as a support for an ordinary sad-iron.
1) indicates the upper tinting-plate, the same being of the general form of a rectangle, and of about a width, usually, equal to the length of the roller. The under side of this plate is transversely corrugated, and it meshes with the corrugations of the roller. It has at each end a raised lug, 6, serving as points of attachment for the handle J, and upon its sides two or more raised ribs or lugs, f. Usually the plate D is cast complete, the ends of the said handle being set in the mold be fore running the metal into the same; but I may use any other method of attaching the handle that I may elect.
The inner faces of the side lugs f are at right angles to those of the end ones, a seat or receptacle being thus formed, in which is seated a heating-plate, L, of suitable dimensions, which being heated imparts its caloric to the fiuting. For convenience of handling, this billet L has a raised central lug, a, or other equivalent device.
Sometimes one or more of the feet of the stand may be longer than the rest, in order that it may be the more conveniently attached to a table-edge by an ordinary clamp, and sometimes I may interpose a shield between the grasping portion of the handle and the upper heating-plate, L.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tinting-iron consisting of a hollow corrugated roller, provided with a heating-billet, and a tinting-plate, corrugated on its under side and recessed upon its upper side, for the reception of a heating-plate, said fluting-plate being provided with a suitable handle, and adapted to be used in conjunction with the corrugated roller, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN NEILL.
