HAT
Original Filed May 18, 1937 INVENTOR E06) L/PTOA/ ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 25, 1938 UNITED T E S PATENT OFFICE HAT Ruby Lipton, New York, N. Y.
1 Claim.
This invention relates to head coverings and more particularly to size adjustable head coverings having openable crowns, and is a division of my copending application Serial No. 143,277, filed May 18, 1937.
It is a constant problem in the millinery trade to provide every style of hat in every needed size. The vast number of styles which are simultaneously in vogue renders it well nigh impossible for the milliner to have on hand at one time even a majority of the current styles in all the sizes which may be demanded. Accordingly wholesalers and retailers of hats are reduced to the necessity of omitting sizes and styles from their lines, thus reducing the attractiveness of their stock and its saleability. The openable crown feature does not relieve the trade of the problem of various sizes for the reason that the size is naturally determined by the band which goes about the head, rather than by the crown itself.
It is an object of this invention to provide a head covering, the size of which will be adjustable to the head size of the wearer which shall have a partially or completely openable crown.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a hat with an openable crown being adjustable as to size, which may be adjusted during the course of its use by an individual wearer according to the amount of hair that the wearer may have at any particular time.
It is a further object of this invention to apply the size adjusting means to a hat having an openable crown, as trim or decoration.
In the drawing which illustrates an embodiment of my invention and forms a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a top view in perspective of a hat having an openable crown with a size adjustable device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View in front elevation showing the ultimate disposal of the size adjusting ribbons as trim.
For the purposes of illustration and disclosure the device of this invention is shown as applied to a brimmed soft hat having an opening in the crown controlled by the conventional hookless slide fastener or zipper, but the illustration is in no sense limiting as the adjustable means may be applied to any sort of a head covering having an openable crown made of any suitable material with or without a brim.
In pursuance of the objects of this invention a hat is provided having a crown I and a brim 2,
the crown being openable by means of a hookless slide fastener 3, which may be disposed about the crown and brim in any suitable fashion in conjunction with the size adjusting slit 4. The size adjustable feature comprises the slit 4 which may extend from a point adjacent the top of the crown to the base thereof and through the brim, having ribbons 5 which may be of fabric, stitched or suitably attached to either side of the opening made by the slit 4 and adapted to be wound in opposite direction about the lower part of the crown tied on the side of the hat opposite to the size adjusting slit in suitable fashion to serve as trim for the hat as shown in Fig. 2. If desired, the ribbons 5 may be inserted under the loops which are conveniently located about the side of the crown adjacent the brim thereof and serve to hold the ribbons in semi-permanent relation to the hat while it is being worn.
If desired, the ribbons may be inserted through the slits 1 before being wound about the base of the crown of the hat. These slits serve the purpose of placing the ribbons in a more stable condition in relation to the hat.
As shown in Fig. 1, a tongue 8 may be inserted in the size adjusting slit. This will serve to close the opening left when the size adjusting slit is broadly extended, but if it is desired to have the crown completely open, the tongue may be dispensed with.
While I have illustrated and described in detail certain preferred forms of my invention, it is to be understood that changes may be made therein and the invention embodied in other structures. I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the specific constructions illustrated, but intend to cover my invention broadly in whatever form its principle may be'utilized.
I claim:
A head covering having a crown, means to open the crown into two portions, hookless slide fastener elements adapted to effect closure of part of the said opening, and size adjusting elements adapted to complete the closure comprising ribbons attached to either side of the opening adjacent the base of the crown, the said ribbons being adapted to be wound in opposite direction about the outside of the head covering and suitably fastened there as trim in position determined by the size of the head of the wearer.
