No. 210,110. Patented Nov. 19,1878.
wrrqessas UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
GEORGE B. FITTZ, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COLLAR AND SLEEVE BUTTONS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,110, dated November 19, 1878 application filed October 31, 1878.
To alt whom it may concern:
Beit known vthat I, GEORGE B.,F1T'rz, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Collar and Sleeve Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
This invention has relation to that class of shirt buttons or studs in which the two -button-plates and their shanks are detachably connected together; and consists in thefconstruction and arrangement ofthe several parts, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a sectional view of my invention, Ais one of the button-plates, having connected thereto a hollow shank, B, formed at its lower end with shoulder a., around the interior thereof. Fitting within the hollow shank B is a hollow tube, C, and around one end of said hollow tube is a coil-spring, b, one end passing out through an opening in the under side of the button-plate A, and bent at an angle to form a spring-catch, c, the purpose of which is to engage with the side o'f the button-hole, thereby retaining the button-plate A in the garment or button-hole, thus obviatin g the necessity of its removal when separating the two parts of the button or stud.
Suitably connected to the outer side of the When it is desired to detach the two parts l ofthe button or stud, Apress uponthe cap D until the lower end ot' the tube C` presses 'against the spring d, thus forcing the lower end thereof past the annular shoulder a, and allowing the shank B to be disconnected from the shank F.-
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The plate A, with shank B, formed with shoulder a, sliding tube C, spring b, and cap D, in combination with plate E, shank F, and spring d, constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a button or stud, the combination, with the plate or plates thereof, of a spring-catch, c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed by name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. FITTZ.
