Description

N. MENUTOLE @c& 26, 1937.
FOOTWEAR Filed Dec 11, 1936 Patented Oct. 26, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOOTWEAR Nicholas Menutole, Chelsea, Mass.
Application December 11, 1936, Serial No. 115,395
1 Claim..
My present invention relates to footwear, and more particularly to a combination of footwear and leggin which provides a tight joint between the leggin and the rim of a specially designed rubber footwear.
The principal object of my invention therefore, is an improved footwear;
Another object is an improved footwear in combination with an improved leggin, and
Other objects and novel features comprising the construction and operation of my device will be apparent as the description of the same progresses.
Referring to the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the combined leggin and rubber footwear;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a disengaged view of the parts shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the leggin removed from the rubber footwear.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, I indicates a rubber foot covering, commonly referred to as, a rubber. The rubber 10 in all respects, excepting the rim which surrounds the opening in the top, may be similar in every respect to the conventional rubber. Instead of having a plain rim, as in the conventional rubber, I have formed flange H which provides an endless track [2 substantially round in crosssection and having an entrance opening I3 reduced in width. Preferably the material comprising this flange H is composed of a stiff but resilient material, as rubber. A leggin member I4 is provided, preferably of thin waterproof material, the bottom flanged edge of which is composed of resilient material, such as rubber. Preferably the flange l5 should be made of softer rubber than the flange material in the rubber flange ll. The leggin may be as long as desired and as tight or loose fitting as desired, but the lower edge comprising the flange 55 should be 45 slightly shorter in circumference than the rubber flange II. The flange i5 is provided with a recess l6 adapted to receive the lip ll of the flange H, and a lip l8 which is adapted to be inserted in the recess l2 of the flange ll.
The leggin M is pulled on over the rubber I0 and the flange I5 is engaged in the flange II, as shown in Fig. 2. The fact that the flange I5 is slightly smaller in circumference than the flange II on the rubber It makes the joint formed between the two flanges very tight, and when properly assembled this joint will not leak even when the foot of the wearer is submerged in water above the joint. The leggin I4 may be of very light material above the flange I5 such that a pair of such leggins may be folded up and carried in the pocket of the wearer.
The joint between the flanges H and I5 provides a water shed in stormy weather so that rain, snow or other dampness does not wet the limbs below the bottom of a rain coat, and the water which normally runs off of the rain coat in a heavy storm is prevented from reaching the wearer.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is.
An improved leggin and foot covering comprising in combination, a rubber foot covering comprising the conventional one piece rubber, the rim surrounding the opening in said rubber comprising an overhanging flange, the bottom edge of said flange being spaced from the side of said rubber, an internal annular channel located be. tween said flange and rubber, the upper portion of said channel being normally wider than the entrance adjacent said bottom edge of said overhanging flange, said bottom edge and overhanging flange being resilient for the purpose of bending outwardly to increase the width of said entrance to said channel, an internal annular flange located on the lower portion of said leggin and being composed of resilient material, the upstanding inner portion of said leggin flange having the same normal cross-sectional area as the annular normal internal channel between said overhanging flange and said rubber, an internal annular channel located between the side of said leggin and said upstanding portion and having the same normal cross-sectional area as the depending portion of the overhanging flange of said rubber, the said flanges being adapted to be interlocked together for the purpose of forming a tight joint therebetween.
NICHOLAS MEN'UTOLE.
