WATERPROOF JOINT FOR TRUNK LIDS AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 1e, 192e @atented Aug. 12, 1930 PATENT GFFCE OSWALD BERGER-STALDER, 0F BERN, SWITZERLAND WATERPROOF JOINT FOR TRUNK LIDS AND THE LIKE Application led November 1S, 1926, Serial N o. 149,213, and in Switzerland and Germany March 8, 1926.
The present invention relates to a` waterproof joint for trunk lids and consists in a pecuiiar arrangement made at the meeting of the edges of lid and trunk body in order to insure a perfect water tightness of the joint.
in the accompanying drawing one form of the invention is shown, in which Fig. lis a fragmentary transverse sectional view showing the joint in open position, and F ig. 2 is a similar view showing the joint in a closed position.
According to the drawing the lid D et the trunk C has a border C1 provided with a tongue-dike edge D1 which may have a velvet lining (not shown).
rlhis tongue-like edge D1 fits into a U- shaped groove A formed by a trame F which is fixed to the edge of the trunk by means of a downwardly extended inner leg F1 while a pocket B is integral with the outer leg ot' the U-trame and projects over the outside of the edge ot the trunk body and is slanted outwardly by means of an elastic packing strip N inserted between the trunk body and the pocket B. The water-tight connection between the trunk body and the trame' is insured by means of a. resilient lining K provided on the top edge and the upper part oit the inner face of the trunk body. The watertight joint comprises tirst a metal shield E which is attached to the outside of the border C1 and is extended downwardly into said pocket B and secondly a water-tight covering El surrounding said lid and the extended por-` tion of said shield. In order to have the pocket B filled up tightly a resilient packing strip H is attached to the outer face ot the shield and adjacent the iower edge thereoiu and likewise enclosed by the covering El.
Haring thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A waterproof joint for trunks and the like including in combination, a trunk body, a lid, a tongue on the lower edge of the lid, a metal trame U-shaped in cross section torniing a U-groove adapted to receive said tongue and fixed to the upper edge of the trunk body v and including downwardly extending inner and outer legs, a resilient water-tight lining between the upper edge of the trunk and the frame and a pocket carried by the outer leg of said U-frame and projecting over the edge oi' the trunk body, an elastic wedging strip inserted between trunk body and the pocket and slanting said pocket outwardly, a sheet metal shield attached to the outer surface of the lid edge for engagement with said pocket, a resilient packing strip attached to the outer face and adjacent the lower edge of the shield and a watertight covering surrounding said lid and shield together with the said packing strip.
