AUNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SAMUEL M. DALZELL, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN OR OF ON E-HALF HIS RIGHT TO EARL A. WHEELER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,663, dated November 5, 1878 g application filed September 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. DALZELL, of Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the. same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation, part sectional, of my bagholder, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction an d arrangement of a bag-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the base of mybag-holder, upon which are secured two hollow posts, B and B', said hollow posts being provided with suitable feet for attachment to the base. vIn the post B' is a rod, O', which may be adjusted up and down, as required, and held at any point by means of a set-screw, a'. The upper end ofthe rod C' is bent at right angles, as shown, and to the end of this bent arm is secured a jaw, D', which is curved or made concave on its inner side and the upper edge turn ed backward and cut to form teeth a' x. This jaw D' operates in connection with a similar jaw, D, and both of these jaws are set in an inclined position, so that when the bag, is placed thereon it will be held with its mou-th inclined, and not square up, thereby facilitating the filling of the bag. The mouth of the bag is drawn outward over the toothed edges of the two jaws, and by devices hereinafter described the mouth is stretched so th at the teeth x will take hold of the bag and prevent the same from slipping.
In the hollow post B is a vertically-adjustable rod, C, held by a set-screw, a, at any point desired. The upper end of this rod is provided with a square horizontal socket, F, through which is passed a bar, G, and on the inner end of this bar is secured the inclined toothed jaw D, above mentioned.
On the outer end of the bar G is placed a nut, pin, or other device, b, .to form a shoulder, between which and the end of the socket F is placed a spiral spring, d, surrounding the bar G. The tendencyv of this spring is to draw the jaw D outward.
In putting on the bag, as above described, the bar G must be pressed inward sufficiently to allow the mouth of the bag to be drawn easily over the two jaws D D', and as soon as the pressure is removed from the bar Gr the spring d throws the same outward, so that the jaw D will draw the bag and hold the same stretched out. When the bag is iilled, by simply pressing the bar G inward a little the bag can be easily removed from the jaws.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of the socket F, rod G, with jaw D, spring d, and nut or its equivalent b, for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the hollow posts B B', adjustable rods O C', inclined curved and toothed jaws D D', socket F, bar G, and spring d, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
sAMEL M. DALZELL.
