Description

Patented Dec. 7,1875.
W/T/VZSSAS/ MPETERS, "NOTO-UYHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. MCGLYMONDS, OF WINCHESTER, KENTUGKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SETTING CARRlAGE-BOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,875, dated December 7, 1875; application filed September 30, 1875.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H.MoOLYMoNDs, of Winchester, in the county of Clarke and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Setting Carriage-Bows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for setting carriage-bows, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, refer ring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section through one of the holders.
A represents the foot or base of my machine, from which rises a post, B, of suitable height. On the post B is a vertically adjustable collar, (J, which may be fastened at any point desired on the post by means of a setscrew, on, and from which extend two arms, D D. The outer end of each arm forms a holder, E, to receive a forming-board, G, which has a series of notches, b, in its upper edge, and is held in the holder by means of a setscrew, (1.
The device thus constructed is set on the seat of the buggy or wagon, on which the top is to be put and placed properly. The bows are then placed over the forming-boards Gin the notches b thereon, as shown by dotted lines in the drawing, the lower ends of the bows being brought up to the slat-irons, when the bows are marked at said irons, so as to be cut off the proper length, thus at once giving the exact length of each bow. The bows are then numbered, so as to avoid mistake, and are removed, cut off as marked, and rounded. The slat-irons are then fastened on as the bows are numbered, when they present the same appearance as when over the set.
Any size or shape of top can be obtained by making the forming-boards G the desired form.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the base A, of a single vertical post, B, the adjustable collar 0 surrounding said post, and having the arms D D and holders E E at their outer ends, and the notched longitudinally-adjustable boards G G resting upon the holders, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAS. HAMILTON MGOLYMONDS.
