IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,143, dated October 20,1874; application filed October 1, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN DOCTOR, of Crown Point, and ADAM SPANIER, of Sehererville, in the county of Lake and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for holding bags while being filled, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of our bag-holder. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of a part thereof.

A represents an annular casting of any suitable dimensions, provided on its outer side with three radiating arms, B B, at'equal distances apart. At the outer end of each arm B is formed a sleeve, a, to pass over a vertical post, 0, to which it is held by a set'screw, b. In the annular casting A is inserted a hopper or funnel, D, one side of which is cut down, as shown at d, to facilitate the filling of the bag, by forming a place where the operator can easily hold the measure or vessel while pouring into the bag. 0n the under side of each arm B are two ears, d d, through which passes a rod, e, surrounded by a spiral spring, f, between said ears, one end of the spring being attached to the rod so as to force the same inward. On the inner end of the rod 6 is formed or secured a toothed jaw, E, as shown in Fig. 3. The outer surface of the ring or casting A may also be toothed directly opposite the jaws E, whereby the bag is held more firmly. To the outer end of each rod 6 is attached a cord, h, which passes over a pulley,

13, on the under side of the arm, and the ropes from two of the arms are also carried over the pulley on the third arm, so that all three cords will pass downward over said latter pulley, and they are tied together, forming knots w m at suitable distances apart. Gr represents a treadle, having a slot, m, cut in one end, and at the inner end of said slot, on the under side of the treadle, is made a recess to receive one of the knots as on the cords. The cords are passed into the slot m, and the end of the treadle supported by the knot, as shown. The casting A, with its arms and attachments, is first adjusted on the posts 0 by means of the set'screws b according to the height of the bags to be filled, and the treadle G also adjusted on the knotted cords. By now pressing down the treadle the spring-jaws E are drawn outward, so as to allow of the mouth of the bag being pulled up around the ring or casting A, when, by removing the pressure from the treadle, the jaws close inward and hold the bag firmly in place. When the bag is filled it is easily released by simply pressing down the treadle.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bag-holder, the annular casting A, provided with radial arms B B, having sleeves a formed on their outer ends, for vertical adjustment on the posts 0 G, by means of the set'screws b, substantially as herein set forth. 2. The combination, with the annular casting A and its arms B, of the spring-jaws E, cords h, passing over the pulleys and tied together with a series of knots, w, and the slotted treadle G, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
