Description

Sept. 28, 1937.
R. W. HOPE WINDOW Filed Nov. 2, 1956 Patented Sept. 28, 1937 UNITED STATES WINDOW Ralph Walter Hope, Halford Works, Smethwick, England, assignor to Hopes Windows Inc.,
Jamestown, N. Y.
Application November 2, 1936, Serial No. 108,865
In Great Britain 2 Claims.
In certain window frame constructions, particularly those made from metal bars, it is a common practice to secure the window panes in position by wood or metal strips supported on the inner edges of the frame and having one side arranged to bear against the pane, this being gripped between the window frame and the strips. These strips when in position form a narrow subframe fitting within the main frame. For some purposes, particularly in hospitals, it is desirable to minimize the accumulation of dirt at the corners of the frames, which parts are not so easily cleanable as the other parts, and the object of the present invention is to enable a curved or other segment to be provided at each corner of the sub-frame in a ready and convenient manner, for reducing risk of accumulation of dust or dirt at those parts.
The invention comprises a hollow sheet metal or other corner piece adapted to pass over and under the usual strips for securing the pane, and to be held in position by the said strips.
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawing:- 1
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a metal window frame showing the window pane secured in position by strips associated with a corner piece constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are respectively a front view, a side view, and a plan of the corner piece shown in Figure 1.
In carrying the invention into effect as shown, I make each corner piece A from sheet metal or from any other convenient hard sheet material such as fabric impregnated with synthetic resin. This is so shaped that it provides a curved surface at which at its ends can merge into the faces of an adjacent pair of the strips b which are arranged at right angles to each other and are used to hold the pane c in position. Each corner piece A is also so shaped that it overlaps the front edges of the strips 1) and provides a pair of tongue pieces d which can be inserted between November 28, 1935 the strips 1) and the main frame 6. One such corner piece is used at each of the corners of the main frame.
After the pane c has been placed in position in the main frame e the securing strips b are then applied, and at the same time the corner pieces A are also placed in position. Finally the strips b are secured in the usual manner by screws f inserted into the main frame e and the securing of the strips serves also to secure the corner pieces.
The invention is not limited tothe example above described as the shape of the corner pieces may be varied. Thus instead of having a curved surface each may be shaped to provide an oblique straight surface across the corner of the window, but the curved surface is usually preferable. Further, when the corner pieces above described are used it is not necessary as heretofore to effect a mitred or like close junction between the adjacent ends of the strips 1) as these ends are enclosed by the corner pieces and they may be cut off to any convenient shape.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. For use with windows in which the panes are secured in position by strips adapted to form narrow sub-frames within the main frames of the windows, a hollow corner piece shaped to pass over the adjacent end portions of a pair of the said strips and to extend between the said end portions of the strips and the main frame of the window so that the said piece can be clamped in position by the said pair of strips. 35
2. A corner piece as and for the purpose claimed in claim 1 and shaped to overlap the front edges of the said adjacent portions of the pair of strips, and to provide a pair of tongue pieces which can beinserted between these portions of the strips and the main frame of the window so that the said corner piece can be clamped in position by the said pair of strips.
