Description

Sept. 14, 1937. w. c. BRoADWELL ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 14, 1937 UNITED sTATas ere newed March 4, 1937. '1934 3 Claims.
This invention relates to clasps of the buttonloop type shown and described in my copending application Serial No. 698,139, now Patent No. 2,006,535, dated July 2, 1935, with respect to which the present application is a continuation in part.
An important object of this invention is to provide in aclasp of the type mentioned simple, effective and generally improved means whereby the button element and loop member may be easily combined and thereafter permanently held in an assembled relation to each other.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a face view of one form of clasp embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig, 3 is a transverse sectional View of the button element shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing another form of clasp embodying the invention; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View of the button element sho-wn in Figs. 4 and 5.
The clasp embodying the present invention, reference being had to Figs. 1 to 3,k includes a loop or loop member 5, of suitable material such as sheet metal, the leg portions 6 of which present a pair of inwardly projecting lugs 'I at opposite sides of the loop opening 8 and at points substantially midway of the length of that opening, and further present immediately adjacent the lugs 1 a pair of `downwardly and inwardly inclined button-engaging walls I0.
Associated with the loop member 5 is a button element II, which may be produced according to the method described and claimed in my above copending application and which includes a retaining strap I2 and a button I4. As to the button element II, it will be noted that the retaining strap I2 thereof comprises a suitable fabric I5, such as a non-stretchable sheeting, in, association with a suitable fabric I6, such as a stretchable stockinet material, the two fabrics being permanently united to each other throughout the length of the strap by an interposed layer of rubber II, as explained in said copending application; and that the button I4 includes a mass of rubber I8 which is in physical union with the layer of rubber I1 and which is disposed intermediate a portion of the non-stretchable fabric I5 and that portion of the stretchable fabric I6 which is so distorted in the button-element forming operatio-ns described in said copending appli- In Canada October 26,
cation that it conforms generally, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to the contour of the button within which it is embedded.
In order that the button element II and loop member 5 may be easily combined and thereafter 5 permanently held in an assembled relation, the latter is formed with an aperture 28 and is provided with a substantially U-shaped slit, which, as shown in Fig, 1, denes a struck-up anchor tongue 2l, between the free end' of which and 10 the adjacent wall of said slit is afforded a slot 22, which is contiguous to the usual support-receiving opening 23 and the width of which,` when the tongue is moved into the plane of the `loop member, is slightly less than the normal thickness 15 of the retaining strap I2 of the button element. By utilizing the tongue 2 I, the button element I I may be effectively anchored to the loop member 5, and in doing so the outer end of the retaining strap I2 is passed through the slot 22 from the 20 rear of the loop member, thence ydownwardly over the tongue 2l and into the aperture 29, whereupon the tongue 2| is moved into the plane of the loop member where it exerts an impinging action on the retaining strap, whereby the button element 25 and Yloop member are permanently held in an assembled relation.
Referring to the form of invention shown in Figs. 4 to 6, it will be noted that the button element I I differs from the button element herein- 30 before described in that its retaining strap I2 in the immediate vicinity of its associated button I 4' is somewhat wider than and extends laterally beyond the same, as shown most clearly in Figs, 4 and 6, and in that the retaining strap is 35 formed at its outer end with a transversely disposed retaining rib or bead 24 which is produced according to the method described in my copending application of even date herewith and which presents a retaining shoulder 25. As to the loo-p 40 or loop member 5', it will be noted that it differs from the loop member 5, hereinbefore described, in that its anchor tongue 2 I which, as shown in Fig. 4 is defined by a substantially U-shaped slit corresponding to that mentioned in connection with Fig. 1, is curved so as to, in effect, shorten it suhiciently to allow, between its free end and the adjacent wall of said tongue-defining slit, an ample space or slot 22 to accommodate the ribbed or beaded end of the retaining strap. By utilizing the tongue 2l', the button element II may be effectively anchored to the loop member 5', and in doing so the outer end of the retaining strap I2' is passed from, the rear of the loop member through the usual support-receiving 55 button element 'l I are permanently held in an opening 23', intermediate which and the anchor tongue 2 l is formed a rib-engaging gusset 21, and is thereafter so introduced intoy the space or slot 22 afforded between the tongue 2| and the gus- `set 21 as to enable the retaining shoulder 25 to engage the gusset as shown in Fig. 5, whereupon Vthe tongue 2|' is moved into engagement with the strap I2 in the vicinity of the retaining rib 24 where it'exerts an impinging action on the strap, whereby the loop member 5' and assembled relation. Y Y.
It will be understood that various changes othT er than those herein shown and Vdescribed may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. For use with a button element including a Yretaining strap, a clasp of the button-loop type including a loop member having a substantially U-shaped slitformed therein and Vdening an anchor tongue the free end Vof which forms with vthe adjacent wall of said slit a slot adapted to Vao retaining strap provided at its outer end with a retaining rib, and at its other end with ak button, a clasp of the button-loop type including a loop member having a substantially y;Ushaped slit formed therein and defining an anchor'tongue the free end of which forms with the adjacent wall of said slit a slot adapted to receive the outer end of the retaining strap together with its associated Vretaining rib, said tongue being 'adapted to be moved intoimpin'glng engagement with said retaining strap at a point intermediate said rib Vand said button and there serve to permanently .hold said button element and loop member in other end ywith a. button, a clasp of the buttonloop typeVY including aloop member having a sub- Y Vstantially YlJ-shape'd slit formed therein and kderof said strap from saidY slot and. serve to hold Y Y said button element and loop member in a permanently assembled relation to each other.
