The present invention relates to locking devices foruse in connection with doors or the like, and more particularly to locking means adapted for doors such as are generally used on gates, cells, building entrances, safes and vaults.
One of the objects of the present invention is to incorporate in a door, locking means of improved construction for securing the door in 1(2; closing position with the door frame. Another object of the invention is to provide improved locking means for doors which will facilitate the locking and unlocking of the doors. Another object of the invention is to provide a locking l5: device for doors which operates to lock the door to the frarneat opposite sides thereof simultaneously, and which serves to unlock the door in a similar manner. A further object of the invention is to provide a locking device for the pur- 20 poses aforesaid, which is simple in construction and practical in use. Other objects and advantages of the present invention will in part be pointed, out hereinafter and will in part be apparent to those skilled in theart to which the 25 invention relates.

,50 Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Fig. 2 shows by way of illustration a door frame it! of substantially rectangular shape, to the sides of which are 55 hinged a pair of swinging doors II. The locking enlarged cross sectional view on I devices l2 are incorporated within the inner marginal portions of the doors II, and are adapted to lock the doors to the top and bottom of the door frame I0.
- As illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the locking device consists of a longitudinal tubular casing M, which is preferably constructed integral with the door. The casing M is provided with two annular flanges l5 and it, which are in spaced relation, and with two oppositely disposed longitudinal slots H, which are arranged between the two flanges. Embracing the casing I4 and posi tioned between the two flanges l5 and I6 is a sleeve it, 'which is adapted to rotate relative to the casing 54, and is actuated by means of a handle E9. The rotary sleeve I8 consists of two longitudinal sections which are joined together by means of bolts 20, which pass through the ears 2!. If desired, the two sections of the sleeve l8 may be welded together. Each section of the sleeve 18 is provided on the inner surface with a spiral groove 22in the upper portion thereof and an oppositely disposed spiral groove 23 in the lower portion thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 6. It will be apparent, that when the two sections of the sleeve l8 are joined together, there is provided a pair of oppositely convoluted, spiral grooves 22 in the upper portion of the sleeve l8, and a similar pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves 23 in the lower portion of the sleeve It. The function of the spiral grooves and the purpose of their arrangement will be brought out hereinafter.
Carried within the tubular casing M are two bolts. and 25. The bolt 24 is adapted to slide vertically within the upper portion of the casing M and the bolt 25 is adapted to' slide vertically within the lower portion of the casing. The bolt 24 is provided at its lower end with a cross pin 26, the ends of which are adapted to project through the longitudinal slots I! in the casing l4 and to engage the oppositely convoluted spiral grooves 22 in the sleeve l8. Likewise, the bolt 25 is provided at its upper end with a cross pin- 21, the ends of which are adapted to project through the longitudinal slots I! in the casing I l and to engage the oppositely convoluted spiral grooves 23 in the'sleeve IS. The bolts may be constructed of solid material or they may be tubular in construction with solid tips 28 fitted into the ends as shown in Fig. 2.
Recesses may be provided in the top and bottom of the door frame ill to receive the bolts 24 and 25 respectively.
In Fig. 5, there is shown a portion of the top of the door frame I!) having a depending flange 29 to provide a recess 30 for receiving the bolts 24. The flange 29 is preferably provided with an apron 3! which serves as a back stop for the 5 doors in closed position. I
When the door II is in unlocked condition, the handle I 9 of the rotary sleeve I8 is situated to one side, away from the inner edge of the door. In this condition, the bolts 24 and 25 are wholly 10 contained within the casing M. The cross pin 26 is then at the lowermost points within the oppositely convoluted grooves 22 and the cross pin" 21 is at the uppermost points within the oppositely convoluted grooves 23, Both cross pins 26 and 21 are situated intermediate the ends of the longitudinal slots I1. When it is desired to lock the door, the handle I9 is swung to the opposite side so as to rotate the sleeve l8 relative to the casing l4. By this action, the cross pin 26 is guided by the spiral grooves 22, so as to move upwardly within the slots I1, thereby ejecting the bolt 24 from the casing I4 and causing it to enter into locking engagement with the recess at the top of the door frame.- Simultaneously the cross pin 21 is guided by the spiral grooves 23 so as to movedownwardly within the slots l1, thereby ejecting the bolt 25 from the casing I4 and causing it to enter into locking engagement with a recess in the bottom of the door frame. In order to unlock the door, the sleeve I8 is rotated back to its original position by means of the handle Hi. The bolts 24 and 25 are thus drawn into the casing l4 and out oflocking engagement with the door frame. It will thus be apparent that the locking device operates to simultaneously lock the door to the top and bottom of the doorframe with but a single movement of the handle I!) and to unlock the door in a similar manner. The length and pitch of the spiral grooves in the sleeve l8 are designed to give the required vertical displacementto the bolts 24 and 25. The ends of the spiral grooves are preferably cut hori zontally as shown at 32, so as to provide shoulders upon which the cross pins maybe retained against slipping out of position.
When the doors are'inlocked relation with the door frame, the locking devices may be secured against unlocking by means of a latch I3, which is adapted to engage the lugs 33 on the rotary sleeves I 8' and thus hold them against counterrotation. I
'Although theinvention is essentially as de-, scribed hereinabove and as shown'inthe drawings, it is desired to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment thereof herein shown and described for the purpose of illustration, but that numerous changes may be made in the details of construc: tion which will fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the appendedclaims.
Having thus described and illustrated the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p

In a door or the like, locking means, comprising a tubular casing integral with the door and having a longitudinal slot'therein, a rotary sleeve embracing the casing, said sleeve being provided internally with a spiral groove, a bolt slidable longitudinally within the casing, a pin on said bolt projecting through the slot in the casing and engaging the spiral groove in the sleeve,- and means for rotating the sleeve rela- I tive to the casing whereby the bolt;is reciprocated .withinthe casing.

In a door or the like, locking means, com- 45 prising a tubular casing integral with the door and having two oppositely disposed longitudinal slots'therein, a rotary sleeve embracing the casing, said sleeve being provided internally with a pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves 50 in one portion thereof, and an oppositely disposed pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in the other portion thereof, a'bolt slidable longitudinally through one end of the casing and another bolt slidable longitudinally through the other end of the casing, the-inner end of each bolt having a cross pin projecting through the slots in the casing and engaging the corresponding pair of oppositelyconvoluted spiral grooves in the sleeve and means for rotatingthe o sleeve relative to the casing whereby the bolts are simultaneously reciprocated within the casing.
6. In a door or the like, locking means, comprising a tubular casing integral with the door 65 and having twoannular flanges and two oppositely disposed longitudinal slots therein arranged between said flanges, a rotary sleeve embracing the casing and I positioned between the said flanges, said sleeve being provided internally 7 with a pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in one: portion thereof and an oppositely disposed pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in the other. portion thereof, a, bolt slidable longitudinally through one end of the casing and another bolt slidable longitudinally through the other end of the casing, the inner end of each bolt having a cross pin projecting through the slots in the casing and engaging the corresponding pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in the sleeve, and a handle on the sleeve for rotating it relative. to the casing, whereby the bolts are simultaneously reciprocated for engagement with the door frame.

A pair of doors, each having a tubular casing integral therewith along the inner marginal portion thereof, each casing having two oppositely disposed longitudinal slots therein, a rotary sleeve embracing each casing, each of said sleeves being provided internally with a pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in one portion thereof and an oppositely disposed pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in the other portion thereof, a pair of bolts slidable longitudinally through respective ends of each casing, the inner end of each bolt having a cross pin projecting through the slots in the casing and engaging the corresponding pair of oppositely convoluted spiral groovesin the sleeve, each sleeve having a handle for rotating it relative to the casing which it embraces, whereby the bolts in the casing are simultaneously reciprocated for engagement with the door frame, and means for locking the two sleeves together in closed position.
8. A locking device for doors or the like comprising a tubular casing having oppositely disposed longitudinal slots therein, a bolt slidable longitudinally within the casing, said bolt having a cross pin projecting through the slots in the casing, a rotary sleeve embracing the casing, said sleeve being provided internally with oppositely convoluted spiral grooves for engagement with the cross pin of the bolt, whereby upon rotation of the sleeve the bolt is reciprocated within the casing.

A locking device for doors or the like comprising a tubular casing having oppositely dis posed longitudinal slots therein, a pair of bolts each slidable longitudinally within the casing, the inner end of each bolt having a cross pin projecting through the slots in the casing, a rotary sleeve embracing the casing, said sleeve being provided internally with a pair of oppositely convoluted spiral grooves in one portion thereof, and an oppositely disposed pair of oppositely convoluted grooves in the other portion thereof, for respective engagement with the cross pins of the bolts, whereby upon rotation of the sleeve the bolts are simultaneously reciprocated within the casing.
10. A locking device for doors or the like comprising a tubular casing having twooppositely disposed longitudinal slots therein, a pair of bolts each slidable longitudinally within the casing, the inner end of each bolt having a cross pin projecting through the slots in the casing, a rotary sleeve embracing the casing, said sleeve comprising two longitudinal segments joined together, each segment being provided internally with a pair of longitudinally spaced oppositely convoluted spiral grooves for respective engagement with the cross pins of the bolts, whereby upon rotation of the sleeve the bolts are reciprocated within the casing.
