FREDERICK K. COLLINS, OF BUTLER, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,715, dated October 8, 1878; application filed March 7, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREnERIoK K. Counts, of Butler, in the county of De Kalb and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Fanning Attachment forBeds, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lrepresents an end elevation of a bedstead with my improved fanning attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for beds, sofas, &c., an improved attachment by which the person sleeping or resting thereon will be fanned in a superior manner, and thereby a current of air supplied sufiiciently to keep the bed cool and insure a more comfortable rest in hot weather.
The invention consists of a bed-cover or cloth that is hung to hooks at the foot end of the bedstead and attached to fulcrumed crankarms at the head end of the bedstead. The crank-arms are operated by crank-rod connection from a suitable clock-train, so as to impart a fanning motion to the spread or cover.
In the drawing, A represents a bedstead or other support for resting the body, and B a cloth or spread that is attached to fixed hooks to at the foot end of the bedstead, and, at suitable height above the head of the sleeper, to outer hook-shaped ends of fulcrumed crankarms 0 at the head-board of the bedstead. The opposite ends of the crank-arms G are connected by intermediate links I) to the crankrod D of the clock-train E, that is placed under or close to the bedstead. The action of the clock-train raises and lowers the cloth and produces a current of air sufficient to cool the bed and keep the sleeper comfortably cool in warm Weather. The raising and lowering of the cloth may be accomplished either at the foot or head end of the bedstead or in the middle, or both ends may be raised or lowered at the same time, as found most convenient. The clock-train is to be run with a governor, so as to produce a noiseless motion of the same. It is to be made of such size as to run from six to eight hours continuously. The crank-arms are hung to fixed supports cl of the bedstead, the supports being made adj nstable, so that the fan attachment may be raised to any desired height, according to the position of the person on the bed, sofa, or other support. In this manner a simple and efl'ective device for fanning and cooling beds in summer season is obtained, that maybe readily detached when not in use, and replaced when required.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a bedstead or other support for the body, of a fanning attachment consisting of a cover or spread, secured at one end and raised and lowered at the other end by fulcrumed crank-arms and an actuating clock-train, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a bedstead or other support for the body, of a cover or spread, attached at one end to fixed hooks of the bedstead and at the other end to fulcrumed reciprocating crank-arms, set in motion by a clocktrain, so as to produce a fanning action of the spread, substantially as set forth.
