Description

J. LEHNER. Automatic Fans.
Patented May 6,1873.
Inventor: 7 Per OC Attorneys.
AM. PHOTO-LITHOGIFAPH/C co. MY. (Osman/Ely naasss} UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JACOB LEHNER, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS.
IMPR OVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,567, datcd May 6, 1873; appliration filed March 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB LEHNER, of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fan Attachment for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an end view of a cradle with my fan attachment, showing the mode of operating the same in connection with a rocking-chair and Fig. 2 is a side view of the fan attachment partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an adjustable fan attachment for bedsteads, cradles, &c., by which the fanning is accomplished by the motion of a rocking-chair, which may communicate to a cradle also the rocking motion. My invention consists of an upright attachment to the bedstead, which may be adjusted suitably, and which carries the fan or other attachments for keeping off the flies.
By means of pulley and strings connected with a rocking-chair the fan is operated by the motion of the same, allowing thereby comfortable rocking and reading, while, at the same'time, fanning the patient or the baby. By attaching the fan arrangement to a cradle and placing the same on a bottom frame with lateral grooves, connecting the rocking-chair by a rod with the cradle, the operation of fanning and rocking is accomplished at the same time, without the least inconvenience to the attendant;
In the drawing, A represents the bedstead or cradle, to the upper or head board of which is attached on the outside the guide-casing B, screwed or otherwise fastened to the headboard. A segmental slot, a, allows the insertion and rigid adjustment of a thumb-screw, b, on the upright fan-support O, which is centered by screw 0?, and is laterally adjustable in casing B. To the upper part of support 0, which is suitably strengthened by bracketsupport 6, is attached the horizontal shaft f, which carries at the front end the adjustable headpiece D, having an aperture for the insertion of the handle of fan E. Suitable headscrews g secure head-piece D to shaft f and fan E to the head-piece D. Double-grooved pulley F is keyed to the rear end of shaft f, having buttons h, one of which is connected with a string to a button, z, of the rockingchair, the other by an India-rubber string or band with a button, 1', of support 0. The motion of the rocking-chair will therefore, in connection with the rubber band, communicate reciprocating motion to the fan.
By attaching support 0 with casing B to a cradle, which is placed on a frame, G, with grooves for the rockers and standards H near the head of the cradle, and screwing strong buttons K to the head-board of the cradle and the arm of the rocking-chair, the notched rod I may be slipped over buttons K and the eradle rocked with the chair. Pulley F may be also connected by leather strings placed on buttons h in its outer groove and around its periphery, with buttons l on top of standards H, moving, therefore, the fan by the motion of the cradle. Wedge-pieces m of frame G prevent the rocking of the cradle, if such is not desired, and allow then the fanning by the string and pulley arrangement described. A string and handle may be attached to the end of frame G for the purpose of pulling the frame with cradle to any place desired, outside of the house or in the garden, the frame allowing the unobstructed fanning and rocking of the cradle.
The whole operation of fanning and the keeping off of flies may bythe use of my attachment be intrusted to children and attended to without inconvenience.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a cradle, the casing B having segmental slot to, as described.
2. The support 0, in connection with casing B and head-screws b and d, adjustable in the position described, as set forth.
3. The shaft f, in connection with pulley and slotted head-piece I), having set-screws g to adjust fan E, as described.
4. The pulley F having button h, connected by string and rubber band with button 1 7 The frame G, having grooves for the era-- of rocking-chair and z" of support 0, to condle, wedges m, and standards H, combined as Vey the motion of the rocking-chair to the fan. set forth.
5. The pulley F, having'buttons h connect- 8. The combination of the various parts ed by leather strings with buttons 1 of standmentioned in the foregoing clauses of the ards H, in combination with rod I and butclaim. tons K, to fan and rock the cradle, substan- JACOB LEHNER. tially as described.
6. In combination with rocking-chair and Witnesses: cradle, the detachable notched rod I, for the THOS. J. SHEEAN, purpose described. JOHN J. JoNEs.
