Description

J. R. LOMAS. Organ-Pedal.
No. 208,528. Patented Oct. 1,187.8.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN B. LOMAS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO B. SHONINGER, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVEMENT IN ORGAN-PEDALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,528, dated October 1, 187 8 application filed July 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concer-n'.-
Be it known that I, J oHN R. LOMAS, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Organ-Pedals; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, front view, the pedals closed; Fig. 2, vertical section, enlarged; Fig. 3, front view, showing one of the pedals when open.
This invention relates to an improvement in the arrangement of blow-pedals for organs, the object being to hang the pedals to a folding front, so that when not required for use.
they may be thrown into the case, and by the peculiar method of hanging be self-securing; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and more particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the front of the bellows as ordinarily arranged within the oase; B, the front of the case above the pedal-opening C. To the bottom of the case, and substantially in line with the front B, the pedaLbase D is hinged, as at a, and it may or may not close the opening C, that being entirelyimmaterial to this invention. On the inner side of the base D the blow-pedals E are hinged, as at b, the hinging-point d being within a vertical line through the hinge a, as indicated by the broken line e. To the inner end of the pedal E a strap, F, extends over a pulley, G, above, to the bellows, the axis of the pulley being inside the line e. When the pedals are required for use, the base D is turned downward, as in broken lines, Fig. 2, bringing the pedals into proper inclination for use. When not required for use, the base D is turned upward, and the weight of the pedals coming upon the inside of the base D, and within the vertical line through the hinge a, the tendency of the pedals is that, so soon as the hinge ofthe pedal has passed within the vertical line of the hinge a., the center of gravity of the combined peclals and base D is within that vertical line; hence will force the base and the pedals inward until they come to a bearing, which is their closed position. This weight of the pedals therefore serves to hold them with the base in the closed position.
I claim- The combination of the base D, hinged at the front, and the pedals E, hinged to the said base, inside the vertical line through the hinges of the base, with the bellows of an organ, and connection between said bellows and pedals, substantially as described.
JOHN It. LOMAS.
