UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WALL, OF BIRMINGHAM, AND JAMES NEWMAN, OF SMALL HEATH, NEAR BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS AND STUDSN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,442, dated September 24, 1878; application filed March 4, 1878; patented in England, September 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN WALL, of Birmingham, and JAMES NEWMAN, of Small Heath, near Birmingham, England, jewelers, have invented new and useful improvements in constructing, adapting, and applying dressfasteners to various parts of dress for ladies or gentlemens use, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, and for which we have obtained Letters Patent in England, sealed September 22, 187 7 ,bein g No. 1,320 for the year 187 7 My invention relates to sleeve buttons, studs, or clothes fasteners; and consists in making them not only with two shanks, each shank to be inserted in a button-hole adapted for it in a cuff or garment, and with a lockingspring, which permits the two parts to be sep arated from each other to facilitate the use of putting the cuff or garment on or oif, but, in connection with these features, providing each of the two parts with two heads or disks, whereby each part will be securely held in its button-hole, even when these parts shall have been separated or disconnected from each other, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
Figure 1 is a side view of a fastener having two heads (marked, respectively, cand b) and two flanges (marked h and h,) one of which (marked h) is soldered or otherwise secured to the middle of the hollow shank a, which is connected to the disk forming the back of the button, and is represented in side view and plan at Figs. 2 and 3. The other flange (marked h) is secured in like manner to the end of a short piece of tube, (1, forming the shank, which is secured, by soldering or otherwise, to the back of the front part of the fastener, for receiving the end of the small tube forming the shank on the top of the back part of the fastener, so that when the two parts are brought together they are secured to each other by a suitable spring or catch, and the flanges [L h are also brought in contact with each other at the middle of the shank or stud, as shown in Fig. 1. When in use the two separate parts are severally inserted in the corresponding button-holes in the cuff or other article of dress, and are held there securely by the flanges, the material lying between the flanges of each shank and the two disks forming the front and back parts of the fastener, so that the cuff may be taken from the wrist by simply applying a slight pressure to the pusher, (marked f,) the two parts of the garment or cuff being thus disconnected without the fastener being removed therefrom, thus avoiding any possibility of loss arising from either the front or back part of the fastener falling from the cuff or being mislaid.
Fig. 4 is a front view of Fig. 1, the shape and form of which may be greatly diversified, and may be ornamented in any desirable manner. It may, for instance, partake of the shape and form of a buckle or otherwise, which would be particularly applicable to boots and shoes.
In the accompanying drawings the figures are drawn enlarged, so that the parts may be better understood.
It will now be seen that when applied to the button-hole of a garment, each member may be separately applied, and then looked to its fellow part or member to form a single fastener or sleeve-button, and that when unlocked these parts separate from each other, and yet each part will retain its hold to the garment by reason of its having two holding heads or disks.
What we claim as our invention, and wish to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The sleeve-button, stud, or clothes-fastener described and shown, consisting of the two independent shanks, each provided with a head at one end and a flange or disk at its other end, and having the spring-catch and pusher f, whereby the shanks may be locked together, bringing the flanges face to face, all as and for the purpose set forth. 7
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN WALL. JAMES NEWMAN.
