UNITED STATES,A PATENT GEEICE.
JEREMIAH OMEARA, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,419, dated September 24, 1.878 application led September 9, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH OMEARA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing, of which the following is a specification The ob]- ect of my invention is to produce packing material of desirable kinds in forms enabling the user to expeditiously', conveniently, and without waste, cut rings or washersof the dimensions desired for any particular purpose.
Cylinders ci packing material composed of wound or rolled canvas and a solution of indiarubber are objectionable, because they cannot be cut into thin rings or washers readily without frayin g and losing their integrity, because, it' the outer canvas becomes detached, a sticky surface of in dia-rubber is exposed, and because the unequal expansion of the canvas and the india-rubber occurring in the use of rings or washers cut from such tubes causes them to fall to pier es, so as to be useless.
The' object of this invention is to obviate these difculties; and to this end the invention consists in a cylinder, round bar, or stick of homogeneous lubricant packing material, preferably a composition of india-rubber and plumbago, adapted to be cut into packing-rin gs or washers of the required sizes.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a perspective view ot' a cylinder, round bar, or stick ot lubricant homogeneous packing material embodying my invention. Fi 0". 2 is a similar view of a hollow cylinder, bar, or stick of the same material, and cut spirally throughout a portion ot' its extent. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are perspective views of washers cut from the said cylinders.
Similar let-ters of reference designate corresponding parts in allthe ligures.
The solid cylinder, round bar, or stick represented in Fig. l is adapted to be transversely cut into washers like that illustrated in'Fig. 3, and of any desirable thickness. These washers may be perforated to suit the purpose for which they are desired, such as for the seats of the valves of compressioncocks.
The hollow cylinder, round bar, or stick represented in Fig. 2 has a spiral cut, a, throughout a portion of its length. It is to be cut transversely into rings of suitable thickness, similar to the solid ring represented in Fig. 4, or, if taken from the spirally-cut portion, into rings having lapped ends, similar to the ring represented in Fig. 5.
If desired, rings composed of two lapped sections, similar to that illustrated in Fig. 6, may be produced by properlyv cutting a solid ring. The rings havin glapped ends are advantageous in some cases, because they can, on being opened, be slipped sidewise around a stem or rod to be packed.
It will be seen that by my invention I produce a cylinder or round stick of lubricant packing material which, because of its homogeneous character, can be cut to form washers almost as thin as paper, will notl lose its integrity through expansion and contraction, and can be trimmed inside or outside, to adapt it for any particularpurpose, without presenting any dili'erent surface, wherefore I have produced a very desirable article, from which desirable washers or rings of lubricant homogeneous packing material may be conveniently and expeditiously cut.
' That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As a new article of manufacture, a tube of homogeneous or solid packing material, composed, preferably, of india-rubber, asbestus, and plumbago, and made of a size to iit in a stuiiingbox, and adapted to be cnt in to rings of any desired thickness, substantially as specified.
2. A new article of manufacture, consisting of a tube of solid packing material, provided with a spiral cut, a, whereby it may be cut into packing-rings having lap ends, substantially as specied.
J EREMIAH OMEARA.
