iMPROVEMENT IN PiSTON-PACKIN'GS.
Sceciiiccticn forming part of Letters Patent No. 63,071, dated March 19, 1867; rein sue No. 6,905, date Febrnary 8, i876; application filed January 11, 1876.
To cit whom it may concern of two eiastic bodies or snbsts'mces of diiier- Be it known tbat 1, JAMES l5". McLean, of cat expensive and absorbent properties, so the city of New York, in the county of New argecl that the absorbent body will be York and State of New York, have invented forced and held against the rod. shaft, or cylnew and useful Improvements in Steam or inder by the more expansive and more elasother Packing 'for Piston-Ends, ()ylizniers, or ticsabstancci-iniliarubber. find that steam Shafting; and I do hereby declare the followcauses shrinkage of'tbe absorbent packing, ing to be a full, clear, and exact description and hence it becomes necessar Y to either pm. thereof, reference being bad to the aceomin more packing or employ some other means panying drawings, which are lettered to corto ovcrcomesaid shrinkage and force the respond with and form a part of this sneciiipacking; against the contactsnriaccs'; conse cation. qnently i employ the indiarnbber as a follo enable those skilled in the manufacture lower, which, being expansive and having a and use of steam and other packing" to concapacity for retaining its expansive powers, struct and use packing embodying my iinntc ets provcments, I will refer to the dim" cg-s, i V r. l Figure l iilnstrates in section a steani gine cylinder containing a piston and roi 31 i vided with my improved paclii 5 Fig. The ns (in-packing is shown coinrepresents in perspective a piston pack ng bincd with the piston in Fig. 1, and detached embodying my improvement detached from therefrom in perspective, ii an enlarged scale, I
press-ore of the absorbent nhe snriacc'with which it is sack igcontact. zlrawin l denotes a piston, and S the piston. Fig. 3 represents in perspective, in Fig. 2. The gland crrosl packing is shown on an enlarged scale, a piece of my improved in section in Fig". 1, and, on an enlarged scale, packing, adapted for use in gland. with in perspective in Fig. 3. The absorbent Inapiston-rod.
' tez'ial-coric--is shown at O, and in each in- In each of these figures the paciringis shown stance it is arranged so as to be in. contact to ,be composed of cork and of rubber, so as with the surface of the rod or cylinder with ran ed with relation. to each other and to the which it packs, and this absorbent when in sumac-es with which the packing is en use is constantly forced toward and against gage, that the rubber will operate as a iolsaid surfaces by the elastic body of rubber he aforesaid shrinkage and main.
lower and force the cork, charged with inbr l secure the rubber and cork together by eating matter by absorption, against said snrmeans of strips, (shown at N,) which are comfaces. In each instance the cork serves as a posed of lead or zinc, and are wound around compressible absorbent for the lubricating; the same, as shown in the drawings; When matter, and it is arranged in a series oi'ccncenlead isnsed iwonld harden it a little by means trio layers, each layer being parallel with the of antimony, which composition may berollcd longitudinal surface against which the pack into sheets from which the strips may be out. ing engages, andalso concentric with salt?. svr- Zinc will be found. to answer a good purpose faces. in this connect-ion, and wili be snificiently Imn'aware that cork and lead have hcreto-f hard for ordinary packing uses, and, when forebeen combined in packing, and that indiaforced against the surface with which the rubber has been heretofore combined with packing is to engage, the strips become emcanvas and lead, and also that rubber has bedded into the packing and hold it in shape heretofore been used as a central core around without the requirement of canvas or other which canvas, saturated in rubber, has been jackets. When in use the quirks or intertightly wrapped,- hence they are not claimed stices of the absorbent become filled with the as my invention in this application when comlea'ilcn or zinc particles and the lubricatingoil, thereby making the packing perfectly My invention consists in the combination steals-tight. in my opinion, the cork, when filled, as stated, forms a lubricating packing equal to black lead, after shrinkage of the absorbent has been overcome by means of the elastic follower, as described. It neces sary, I prepare the cork by coating it with a composition of black lead and pulveriz d sc ap-stonev or talc, or these may be used separately for filling up the quirks or interv sticesoi' the cork, aml'protecting' it from burning, as well as to add to its lubricating properties.
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by these Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. The combinatioin'in a packing for pistons, rods, 850,, of two elastic bodies or substances, one of which is an absorbent, and is arranged to engage in packing-contact with a cylinder or red, and the other is arranged to operate as a follower for forcing the abeorbentbody against a cylinder or rod, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with two or more layers of aeompressible and absorbent material, of an elastic rubber follower, substantially as described.
3. Packing composed of a borly of cork for
