PEN AND PENCIL CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,735, dated March 8, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS P. WARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York,

have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Ornamentation of Pen and Pencil Cases, of which the following is aspecitication, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.

My improvement relates especially to that class of pen and pencil cases whose ornamentation consists in the application to the cylinder of decorative materials, such as pearl, shell, &c.; and the object of my present invention is to provide means whereby such embellishmentcan be accomplished with facility, and at the same time renderit enduring. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil-case embodying my improvement, a portion of the ornamental casing being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the ornamental material applied to a cylindrical tube; and

Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the sections enlarged.

These strips are placed only at the points where the sections of shell, metal, or other ma- 3 5 terial which is used for the embellishment of the tube are to be joined, and they may extend longitudinally from end to end of the tube or extend from each end about one-third of the distance toward the middle of the tube.

these sections may be secured to the tube, each section being sawed out to conform to the shape of the tube. They are secured to the strips of muslin and to the tube by cement or equivalent means, and by the use of these intermediate strips a perfectlytight joint is formed at the point where the sections of shell or shell and metal meet, and greater durability of wear is insured, and the danger of the strips springing out or becoming loose at this point 5; during the process of finishing up the case (an evil common in nearly all other methods of securing the ornamental material) is entirely obviated.

In forming the ornamental surface different varieties of shell may be used, either alone or combined, together with gold, silver, or any other metal which will present a pleasing surface when finished. After the tube has received the ornamental material it may be finished up so that its exterior surface is ofcylindrical shape, if desired.

My present improvement in securing the ornamental material to the body of the case possesses great advantages over other means for accomplishing the same purpose heretofore used. A neat close joint is formed, which greatly enhances the beauty of the case, and in constant handling the strips or sections do not become loosened or spring out at their point of union from the tube, thereby rendering the pencil-case unsightly and useless. The same method of ornamentation is equally applicable to pen-holders, tooth-picks, and all other articles with tubular cases.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the tube to, intermediate strips, 1) b, and sections 0 0, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
