WHIP-CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,504, dated January 30, 1883.
Application filed November 15, 1882. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. MoRANn, of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVhip-Oonnections, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a part of a whip to which my improvement has been applied. .Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of my improve- 1 ment. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, of my improvement shown upon a mandrel in process of formation.
The object of this invention is to provide a means for securely connecting the tipswith the bodies of whips, and which shall be so formed as not to injure the covers of the said tips and bodies, while being readily applied thereto.
The invention consists in a whip-connection made of coiled wire having the coils brazed to each other and the ends turned and finished to the desired form, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body, and B the tip, of a 0 whip, which are made and covered in the ordinary manner.
0 is the connection, which is formed of wire wound spirally round a mandrel, D, as illustrated in Fig. 3. When a connection of the desired lengt I has been formed it is removed from the mandrel D, and is brazed in the ordinary manner to firmly connect the coils of the wire to each other, care being taken to prevent the spaces between the coils from becoming filled with solder, and thus giving a smooth inner or outer surface. The ends of the brazed connection are then turned and finished in a lathe, or by other suitable means, to the desired form. The connection 0 can then be ornamented and polished or plated, as may be desired. With this construction the inner surface of the connection will be provided with around spiral thread,
so that it can be readily screwed upon and 0d the euds'of the tip 13, and body Aof the whip will keep its place securely, and will not cut or otherwise injure the covers of the said tip and body. The connections can be sold separately, or can be permanently attached to the tips and sold therewith, as may be desired.
I am aware that ferrules have bel'pre been made of wire soldered together; but I do not know that they have before been brazed and turned on their outsides to form neatly-finished articles suitable for the described; and
I claim as my-invention- As an improved article of manufacture, a brazed coiled-wire whip connection or ferrule with turned and finished ends, substantially 6 as specified.
