Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. Srnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Making Vll'fi Stays; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for making wire stays, and more particularly to a device for bending a strand of wire to shape tl same so that it may be used as a fence stay; the principal object of the invention being to shape the wire conveniently and quickly to provide an effective and economical stay.
In accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a device constructed according to my invention, showing a stay partially formed.
Fig. 11 is a similar view of the barrel member of the device.
Fig. III is an enlarged sectional perspective of the shaping collar.
Fig. IV is a detail View of the collar handle.
Fig. V is a detail view of a stay formed with the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates what I have termed the barrel of the device. and which comprises a metal tubing of substantially the same length as the stay to be formed therewith, and 2 designates what I have termed the shaping collar, and which comprises a tubular member having an interior bore of sufhcient diameter to fit snugly over the barrel l in order to receive the barrel and a strand of the stay wire.

In using the device, a piece of wire of proper length is bent upon itself to form the body and convolute members of the stay; the convolute member before coiling being of greater length than the body member for the reason that during the forming operation it is turned into a spiral about the body member and must necessarily be of greater length than the body in order that the body member may be of the same length with it when the stay is completed. After the wire is bent it is placed on the barrel 1 by projecting the shorter portion into the interior of the barrel, and the shaping collar 2 is then placed over one end of the barrel with the outer strand of the wire located in the spiral groove 3; the collar being held by the handle member6 which, while serving to retain the collar, allows free rotatable movement of the collar therein; the ends of the segments abutting, when closed, to prevent the inner faces of the segments from gripping the outer'surface of the collar, and the se ments 6 being preferably of such width that they will fitsnugly between the collar flanges at to prevent lost motion between the parts.
When the collar is so positioned on the barrel it is forced therealong and the Wire passed through the spiral groove 3 within the collar; the collar rotating about the barrel because of its longitudinal movement and its spiral connection with the wire, and moving freely within its handle to permit its movement about the barrel; the movement about the barrel carrying the wire with it to effect the spiral shaping of-the wire. The movement of the collar continues throughout the length of the barrel and is eventually removed from the opposite end so that the entire outer strand of the wire is shaped.
After the stay has been formed as described it may be lifted off of the barrel and the operation repeated on successively placed stay members.
While I have shown a specific form of structure I do not Wish to be understood as limiting the scope of the invention to such details; particularly of the handle memberwhich in itself forms no part of the present invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A device for making Wire stays, comprising a tubular barrel, a collar movable face, and a handle comprising an inclosing body seated in said seat to provide free rotatable movement of the collar therein and having radial grip portions.
