IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE-BARBING TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,402, dated September 24, 1878; application filed June 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn own that I, MILLIs KNICKERBOCKER, of New Lenox, in the county of WVill and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbing-Instruments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of barbing-instrumcnts 0perated by hand; and the invention consists in the special construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the staple placed in position on the fence-wire, and the barbinginstrument arranged over the wire ready to form a barb of the staple. Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing the inner side of the two parts of the instrument. Figs. at and 5 are front views of the two parts of the instrument, and Figs. 6 and 7 are views looking at the back of the two parts of the same. Fig. 8 is a perspective of the instrument.
In the drawing, A and B represent the two hand pieces or parts of the instrument, constructed in any suitable shape, and formed with circular heads or ends 0 D, as shown. These parts A and B are secured together by a bolt, E, passed through the concentricallyarranged holes F of the ends 0 D, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of drawing. The part A of the instrument is formed with an arm, G, having the inner edge thereof recessed at H, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4 of drawing. This part A is also formed with a shoulder, I, recessed at J, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6 of drawing. The part B of the instrument is formed with an extended arm, K, formed with a shoulder, L. This armK is provided on its inner side with a button or projection, M, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5 of drawing. It is also formed with a shoulder, N, recessed at O in a manner similar to that of the shoulder I of the other part of the instrument.
The operation is as follows: The wire staple P, of which the barb is formed, being properly arranged on the fence-wire, the barb-securing instrument is arranged with the two parts A and B straddling the fence-wire, as shown in Fig. 1 of drawing, the end Q of the staple resting against the shoulder L of the arm K, as shown in Fig. 1 of drawing. The part A of the instrument is held with one hand, and the part B with the other hand. The part B should be held stationary while the other part,A,is pushed downwardly. By thismovement the end It of the staple is caught in the recess H of the arm G, bent down under the fence-wire, and up into the recess 0 of the part B. At the same time the end Q of the staple is bent by the arm K under the fence-wire, and up into the recess J of the arm A. The button or projection M serves to guide the arm G, in order that it may catch the end B of the staple and properly bend it under the fence wire.
In forming the barb the fence-wire is slid back under the head as far as it will go, in order not only to tighten the barb on the fencewire, but to throw the ends Q and R out at right angles with the fence-wire.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V A hand barbing-instrument formed'of the parts A and B, secured together by a bolt, E, as shown and described, the part A being constructed with an arm, G, and a recessed shoulder, I, and the part B constructed with an arm, K, shoulder L, guide M, and a recessed shoulder, N, as set forth.
