Description
,C.KENNEDY. WIRE-FENCE BARB-PINCHERS.
Patented J'u1 y25. 1876.
N. PETERS, P HOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KENNEDY, OF HINCKLEY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WlRE-FENCE-BARB PINCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,35 1, dated July 25, 1876; application filed July 6,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KENNEDY,
of Hinckley, county of De Kalb, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pinchers forApplying Barbs for Fence-Wire; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my improved pinehers. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same, when the pinchers are closed. Fig. 3 represents a side view of a portion of the pinchers when opened and applied to comprssa barb upon a fence-wire, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 4 represents a section on line A B, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 represents an end view of a section of fence-wire after the barb has been compressed thereon.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
My fence barb pinehers are particularly adapted for applying the Kennedy barb, so called, for which Letters Patent were granted to me August 11, 1874.
In the drawings, the parts marked A A are pivoted together at B, while their jaws G O are provided with semicircular eoneavities a a, which, together, when the jaws (J O are closed, form a circular opening, I), the ends of which opening I) are enlarged by means of bevels cc. Y
The operation is as follows: When a barb, D, is to be applied to fence-wire E, the barb is placed with its flange D within the jaws O O, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, its barbs F fitting against one side of the jaws of the pinehers. The operator then places the barb over the fence-wire E, as shown in Fig. 8, and then compressing the jaws O O by means of the handles G G, securely compresses and clamps thebarb about the wire, so that it occupies the relative position,as,respects the fence-wire E, as indicated in Fig. 5 vof the drawings.
By making the Sides of the jaws beveling, as indicated at 0 c, the barbs F are left in a curved or rounded form at their points ofjn nction with the flange D, as indicated at d, Fig. 4. I
" This last feature of my improved pinchers is of great importance, since the base at of the barbs F, when left curved or rounded, as shown in Fig. 4, are not liable to crack or break 011'.
Having described my improved fence-barb.
pinchers, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture, 1s
A pair of piuehers, provided with the circular opening b and beveled sides 0 e, for applying barbs to fence-wire, substantially as described.
- CHARLES KENNEDY.
