PATENT OFFICE RIGHT AND LEFT FULL-FASHIONED-FOOT HOSIERY AND THE METHOD OF MANU- FACTURING THE SAME Paul Richard Uhlig, deceased, late of Auerbach in Erzgebirge, Germany, by Friedrich Lange, executor, Brunswick, Germany- Application May 25, i936, Serial No. 81,787
, In Germany June 8, 1934 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in right and left full-fashioned-foot hosiery and the method of manufacturing the same. Hosiery comprising a tubular seamless body and having the foot portion shaped according to the form of the right and left foot are known in which the toe portion is produced by narrowing the seam at one side. It has also been proposed to manufacture full-fashioned hosiery with a so-callecl French foot by a flat bed or full-fashioned machine, in which the hosiery is likewise shaped according to the toe portion of the right and left foot. In the manufacture of hosiery of this type the foot portion is produced from a foot blank having a double breadth, and for producing a toe portion corresponding to the right or left toe portion of the human foot the toe part of the said foot blank is only slightly rounded inwardly at one side, and at the opposite side it'has a strong curve corresponding to the outer shape of the toes. When the said hosiery is stitched in the usual way and with the seam located at the middle of the sole portion a stocking is produced which does not exactly correspond to the shape of the foot, but which is substantially conical in shape and has considerable folds and distortions.
The object of the improvements is to producev hosiery of the last named type with a so-called English foot, upon a flat bed or full-fashioned machine, in which the shape exactly follows the shape of the right and left foot, and with this object in view theinvention consists in narrowing the instep blank at one side, and correspondingly also narrowing the sole portion at one side, the said portions being united with the narrowed margins placed one upon the other, so that the foot portion of the hosiery is not stretched.
- For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same'has been shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawing,
Fig. 1 shows the lower part of a stocking blank after completion of the instep blank or instep portion,
Fig. 2 shows the lower part of the said stocking blank after addition of the sole blank or portion.
' As is shown in Fig. l, the instepblank 5 has its toe part I narrowed at the side to: the toes, and the sole blank 6 shown in Fig. 2 has its toe portion 2 likewise narrowed at the side 3 next to the toes of the foot, the hosiery narrowings 3 and of the instep blank 5 andthe sole blank 6 being alike. At the opposite sides the longitudinal edges 9 and Ill of the instep blank 5 and the sole blank Bare but slightly narrowed, in accordance with the shape of the great toe. 1 After thus manufacturing the instep blank and the sole blank,
the said parts are placed with the narrowed por-" tions 3 and 4 and with the opposite sides respectively placed upon 'each other, and the corresponding edges are stitched. The result is a fullfashioned stocking which in, shape is similar to tubular seamless stockings having full-fashioned feet.
The ball portion of the human foot is broader than the medial part of the foot, and 'to adapt the hosiery to this shape of the foot theinstep blank and the sole blank are enlarged at the rear of thetoe line as compared to the medial part of said blanks, as'is indicated at I and B. In the construction shown in the figure the instep blank and the sole portion are thus enlarged at one side only. But it should be understood that the invention is not limited to this feature and that.
the instep blank and sole may be enlarged also at their opposite sides, which will be particularly desirable in hosiery for persons having a very pronounced ball.
Up to the line I-I the hosiery blanks are inantance at the inner side of the foot and for a substantially larger distance at the outer side thereof, said instep blank and sole blank having their edges secured together to complete the stocking.
2. A full-fashioned stocking of the English foot type, comprising an instep blank and a sole blank, each having straight edges for the major portion of its length, said blanks being narrowed for a short distance at the side next the great toe in use and for a much longer distance at the opposite side.
3. The herein described full-fashioned hosiery of the English foot type, comprising a foot portion, composed of an instep blank and a sole blank stitched together at their edges, the said instep blank and sole blank being-narrowed for a short distance at one edge and for a much instep blank and a sole blank, which are narrowed for a short distance at one edge and for a much longer distance at the other edge in accordance with the shapeof the toes of the human foot, and thereafter uniting the said instep blank and sole blank with the narrowed edges placed upon each other.
