' GARAGE DOOR HOLDER Filed Jan. 9, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 WUM/ A-Schn 21d ET- Patented May 11, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIQE 2 Claims.
This invention appertains to closures, and more particularly to swinging doors of the type generally employed for garages and the like.
After the doors of a garage are opened, the same have a, tendency to swing back and forth, making it extremely difficult for a person to drive an automobile into or out of the garage. This condition is aggravated if there is any Wind blowing at all. It has heretofore been proposed to provide prongs hingedly carried by the bottom of the door for engaging the ground when the doors are open. However, the prongs slip and can be easily jarred loose and are generally unsatisfactory.
It is, therefore, one of the primary objects of my invention to provide positive means for holding the doors against swinging movement in both directions after the same are open, whereby to permit the entrance. or exit of an automobile into a garage without accident.
Another salient object of my invention is to provide a pivoted latch or look lever movable over a sliding guide, and brace rod for the swinging door to effectively prevent movement of the rod and the consequent accidental swinging of the door.
A further important object of my invention is to provide a swinging door embodying a frame having hingedly connected thereto a brace and guide rod slidably mounted in a bracket carried by the door, the rod and its mounting limiting the swinging movement of the door in one direction, with a pivoted latch lever movable over the rod whereby to prevent movement of the rod and the door in the opposite direction.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved device of the above character for holding the doors of a garage in an open position against accidental swinging movement, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market and incorporated with a door and frame at a reasonable cost.
1 With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary detail view looking from the inside of a door showing my improved device applied thereto, the door being in its open position.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the door and frame, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a detail vertical section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the latch lever positioned over the guide and brace rod.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a slightly modified form of my invention.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a detail, vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates my improved attachment for a door D hingedly carried by a door frame F.
The specific construction of the door and its frame forms no part of the present invention, but the same have been illustrated to show the use of my invention. As illustrated, the door D is connected to the frame F by means of hinges l0. Disposed in spaced relation to the hinges i0 is the stop strip II for the. door D.
My improved attachment A comprises a swinging arm or brace and guide rod 15, the outer end of which is slidably mounted in an opening l6 formed in an angle bracket ll rigidly secured to the inner face of the door D in spaced relation to the hinges Ill. The inner end of the swinging arm or brace rod is rigidly connected to a stop plate I8 which is hingedly connected, as at ill, to the door frame. F at one side of the stop strip II. The brace and guide rod or arm I5 is curved or otherwise suitably shaped so as to extend about the door when the same is in its open position. The plate !8 is adapted to abut against the strip II when the door is in its open position, so as to limit further swinging movement of the door.
Secured directly to the strip II at one side of the hinge plate I8 is an angle bracket 29. This angle bracket 20 includes an attaching portion 2| and an outwardly extending foot 22 having a keeper notch or slot 23 formed therein. Pivotally mounted upon a pivot pin 24 is a latch or look lever 25 having the outwardly extending manipulating handle 26.
When the door D is in its open position, the rod or arm |5 swings over the foot 22 against the attaching plate 2| of the bracket 20, and the latch lever 25 can be swung down over and in front of the brace rod or arm l5 into the keeper recess 23. The engagement of the latch lever 25 with the rod I5 effectively holds the rod or arm l5 against movement and thereby prevents swinging movement of the door in any direction.
My novel attachment effectively prevents accidental swinging movement of the door and positively holds the door in its open position and eliminates accident from the swinging of doors incident to the passage of an automobile into or out of the garage.
When it is desired to close the door, it is merely necessary to raise the latch lever 25 to its elevated position away from the arm or bar l5, after which the door can be closed in its ordinary manner.
The rod or arm 5 forms an important feature, as the same acts as a brace and guide for the door and facilitates the easy opening and closing of the door.
In Figures 4, 5, and 6, I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention, and in these figures, the door frame is indicated by the reference character 30, and the door by the reference character 3|. The door 3| is connected to its frame by the use of suitable hinges 32, and I employ a brace and guide rod 33 for the door, which can be of the same character as the brace and guide rod l5 shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3.
The guide and brace rod 33 is rigidly secured to a swinging plate 34, which is hingedly connected by means of a hinge pin or pintle 35 to an attaching plate 36 rigidly secured to the door jamb. The brace rod 33 is adapted to swing over the stop bead or strip 3'! when the door is swung open and against an angle keeper bracket 38. This angle keeper bracket 38 includes an attaching portion 39 and a right angularly extending supporting plate 40 having a keeper recess 40.
The attaching plate 36 for the hinge plate 34 may be provided with a vertically disposed guideway 4|, in which is slidably and rotatably mounted the latch or lock lever 42. The latch lever 42 is of a substantially inverted U-shape and includes depending arms 43 and 44 and a connecting body portion 45. The arm 44 is slidably and rotatably mounted in the guide 4| and is retained against displacement therefrom by means of a nut and washer 46 and 41.
After the door has been swung open, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, the latch lever 42 is swung in the guide 4| over the hinge plate 34, which is provided with a guide notch 48 therefor into engagement with the brace and guide rod 33. The latch lever is now pushed rearwardly so that its lock arm 43 will ride into the keeper recess 40'.
As the latch or lock lever 42 is pushed rearwardly, its arm 44 will be slid in the guide 4|, and as the guide is so formed as to frictionally engage the arm, accidental sliding movement of the arm will be prevented. Obviously, the engagement of the latch lever with the bar 33 will firmly hold the bar against swinging movement, and consequently accidental closing movement of the door is prevented.
When it is desired to close the door, all that is necessary is to pull forwardly on the latch lever 42 until the arm 43 rides out of the keeper recess 40, at which time the latch lever can be swung away from the bar 33. This will permit the free swinging of the door and the door can be moved to its closed position.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this inhingedly connected to the door frame, a brace and guide rod rigidly connected to said plate and movable over the door frame, a guide bracket rigidly secured to the door slidably receiving the rod, a keeper plate carried by the door frame, and a swinging latch lever secured to the door frame and movable over the rod into engagement with the keeper when the door is in an open position to prevent movement of said rod.
2. A device for preventing the accidental swinging movement of a door on its frame when the door is in an open position comprising a plate hingedly connected to the door frame, and a brace and guide rod for the door rigidly connected to said plate and movable over the door frame when the door is in an open position, a keeper bracket, and a sliding and swinging latch lever carried by the door frame movable over the rod and into engagement with the keeper bracket when the door is in an open position, whereby to prevent movement of said rod.
