Description

Aprll 27, 1937-. J slEBER PORTABLE DEVICE FOR HOLDING WEARING APPAREL WHEN NOT IN USE Filed Feb. 5, 1955 ATTORNEY- m m J Patented Apr. 27, 1937 UNITED STATS TENT OFFIQE PORTABLE DEVICE FOR HOLDING WEAR- ING APPAREL WHEN NOT IN USE James Sieber, London, England 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a portable device for holding Wearing apparel when not in use, and has in view the provision of a portable device constructed and designed to hold the clothes compactly and in a manner such that their appearance will be preserved and creasing avoided, the device being designed for suspension so that a plurality can be compactly accommodated side by side on a bar. An object is to store the clothes in more hygienic manner than is afiorded by present methods.
The device provided by this invention comprises a vertical frame, the upper part of which is designed as a yoke, after the fashion of a coat-hanger. The said frame carries a basket at its lower part for the reception of various articles and oddments, such as socks, shoes, a handbag and so forth. At a position intermediate between the yoke and the basket, and preferably near the top, the frame is provided with a cross bar over which trousers or a skirt or the like can be hung. Preferably, there is provided also a rod attached to one leg of the frame in the form of a peg or bracket to suspend a hat and/or collar and tie. It is to be understood that the term basket includes any suitable box-like receptacle.
A device for holding wearing apparel has already been proposed comprising a horizontal base frame provided with bars for supporting shoes, a pair of vertical legs, connected at their upper ends by a yoke-shaped coat-hanger, pegs for hats and collars projecting from the neck of the yoke at right angles to the plane of the legs, a horizontal crossbar extending between the legs over which trousers can be hung, and a second crossbar, above the first, supporting a tray carried on projecting brackets. This device could be folded into a compact form for transport, but in that condition could not be used for holding wearing apparel, whilst in its extended condition the device was too bulky to be suitable for the purpose of the present invention.
A device of preferred form in accordance with the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front view of said device; and,
Figure 2 is a perspective view thereof.
The device illustrated comprises a frame 3, of substantially inverted U-shape, the upper bridging portion 4 thereof being shaped to form a yoke. At their lower ends the legs 3 of the said U-shaped member are secured to the ends of a basket 5 which conveniently may be of elongated, parallel-sides form or may be of elliptical or other convenient shape. The said basket 5 may consist of horizontal endless rods securing the legs of the vertical frame in spaced-apart relation and stayed by the upstanding legs of U-shaped cross strips 6, which latter, as well as the legs 3 of the vertical frame, may project below the basket to form supporting legs. A crossbar 1 which bridges the space between the legs of the vertical frame serves as a trouser orskirt rail and serves also to brace said frame. A long peg 8 is attached to one of the legs 3 of said frame and extends upwardly into the space within said frame, whilst lying in the plane of the latter, said leg serving for the suspension of a hat, collar and tie.
The basket 5 instead of comprising a set of horizontal endless rods forming the wall thereof and bottom rods attached to the lowermost endless rod, may be formed of sheet metal or other material bent to shape, so as to have solid walls and base, and in this case may be made of metal, wood, basket work or other suitable material.
The upper yoke portion 4 is furnished with a hook 9 for suspension from a bar and the index number of the device will be depicted on a plate I aflixed to said hook.
I claim:
A portable combined garment hanger and basket comprising a coat or dress hanger yoke, a hook medially of said yoke for hanging the same from a support, a basket including a bottom and sides, the ends of said yoke extending downwardly in the form of arms amply rigid when supported at their bottoms to support the yoke with a coat or dress hung thereon, said arms being attached at their lower ends to medial portions of opposite sides of said basket so that
