Description
E. T. KUHN GARMENT HANGER March 13, 1951 Filed Jan. 9, 1948 v INVENTOR. 5,4 RL T KUHN Patented Mar. 13, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER Earl '12. Kuhn, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application January 9, 1948, Serial No. 1,343
' 2 Claims. (01. 223-88) This invention relates to an improvement in clothing or athletic gear hangers and while not necessarily so limited, has more particularly for its object the provision of an improved hanger for storing, airing, and drying apparel and protective devices worn by football players.
The gear worn by football players, as is well known, is heavy, rugged, and cumbersome to store and handle and in use is exposed to treatment which results in its frequently getting wet and dirty. Consequently and because the players are usually careless in their care of their gear, it is desirable to provide means for storing the gear which is not only sturdy and convenient to use,
but is adapted to permit arranging the gear in such a way that it will facilitate its being dried when Wet.
With these circumstances in mind it is an object of this invention to provide a hanger which is exceedingly sturdy, simple and relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and not only convenient to use, but exceedingly well adapted to facilitate the storing and drying of gear mounted on it.
These and various other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent when the following detailed description is read in con unction with the accompanying drawing of which'Figure 1 is a top plan view; Figure 2 an end view; Figure 3 a perspective view, and Figure 4 a front view of a hanger constructed in accordance with the invention, the latter figure showing the hanger loaded with a complete complement of the wearing apparel and safety devices normally used by a football player.
Referring in detail to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the numeral l designates a supporting spreader which is provided for supporting the trousers of a football suit. At its ends this spreader is bent downward and provided with upturned hooks like terminals 2. As shown in Figure 4, the bottoms of the trousers are engaged on these hook-ends 2 and the trousers suspended in an inverted manner with the legs of the trousers well apart to permit free circulation of the air around and through the trousers.
Intermediate the ends of this spreader l a pair of spaced downwardly depending hooks 3 and 4 are secured to the spreader to provide for receiving various protective devices such as rib protectors, athletic supporters, and hip and kidney Walls which the player wears.
At its center the spreader i is secured to a spaced plate 5' to which an upwardly extended hook 6 is affixed and which is employed'to hang the hanger on a rod not shown or on whatever means is employed to support the hanger. At the opposite end of this spacer plate 5 an essentially conventional hanger! is attached. This hanger l is preferably shaped like an ordinary coat hanger and is provided for supporting the players blouse or jersey.
To provide adequate airing of the jersey and to not foul the trousers, the spacer plate 5 is made with a length which displaces the blouse or jersey a sufficient distance from the trousers to afford adequate freedom of air circulation about the jersey. The spacer plate 5 also provides a support for the shoes which can be dropped over by tieing the laces together As shown in Figure 4, after the rest of the gear is placed on the hanger, the players shoulder pads can be placed over the hook 6 with the shoulder straps engaging the sloping ends of the spreader l. o
For purposes of identification a tag 8 is secured to the spreader bar I and while it may be detachable so that it can be readily removed to place the identifying marks on it, it is preferably permanently secured in place.
In the construction of the hanger the various parts are made of metal of sufficient weight to provide the necessary strength, although for obtaining lightness some of the lighter metals like aluminum may be employed for this purpose. As will be obvious, these parts may be united in any suitable way such as by welding as indicated in the drawing or through the use of rivets. As another alternative, the unit may be made by a single stamping and formed to the proper shape, although the latter presents somewhat of a problem of wastage.
As will be readily apparent to any individual responsible for the custody of football gear and the like, a hanger constructed according to this invention will not only greatly facilitate the storage problem, but will also afford a very desirable means of avoiding losses which occur from the customary haphazard way suchgear is stored. In addition, it permits storage of large numbers of outfits on elongate rods or bars in a minimum of space. I
While the foregoing comprises a description of what is considered to be a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
I claim:
,1. A hanger comprising a unitary continuspaced from one another, and a supporting hook secured to said spacer plate.
2. A hanger comprising a unitary continuous trouser-supporting spreader having a straight mid-section, downwardly inclined end sections, and upwardly turned hook sections at the extremities of the inclined sections, a plurality of downwardly extending body protector supports secured in spaced relation to the midsection of the spreader, and provided with upwardly turned hook-shaped lower ends, a spacer plate having one end secured to the center of said spreader, a continuous jersey-supporting hanger bar rigidly secured at its center to the opposite end of said spacer bar, and an upwardly projecting hook secured to said spacer plate.
EARL T. KUHN.
