Description
- J. 'EMEBIOK,
Gap for Cigars.
Patent ed Sept. 10, I878;
fliiorneyaw- NPETERS, PMOTO-LITHOGHAPHER, WASHINGTON. DC-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB T. EMERIOK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS FOR CIGARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,858, dated September 10, 1878 application filed April 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. T. EMERIOK, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaps for the Ends of Cigars, of which I hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar, showing my improved attachments. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective and central sections.
My invention relates to a cap to be attached to the end of a cigar for the purpose of preventing the unwinding of the same; and consists of a cap provided with hook points or barbs connected to its edge, to penetrate the wrapper and hold the cap in place. Said caps may be made of thin sheet metal or other material capable of forming hook-points along its edge, as set forth.
In thcdrawings, A represents a cigar, provided with caps B and O. The cap B is placed 011 the large end of the cigar, and is made to pass over the end of the same about one-eighth of an inch, or as'much farther as practical use may require. This cap is provided with the arms a a, the projecting ends of which being bent to form the barbs b b, which are forced into the cigar in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and secure the cap in place.
The cap 0 is placed on the small or tip end of the cigar, and secures the wrapper at that end, doing away with the necessity of using paste or other adhesive composition for this purpose. These caps 13 and 0 may be secured to the cigars by having two or more diamond-pointed barbs, I), cut in the cap at the time of its manufacture, and when said caps are applied to the cigars these barbs may be forced into the same, thereby securing the cap.
In the manufacture of cigars the outside wrapper is attached to the cigar by the use of paste or other adhesive composition, which very often leaves an unpleasant and disagreeable flavor in the mouth of the smoker, from the fact that the adhesive composition used for the purpose of securing the wrapper to the cigar is usually kept in an open vessel, and is subject to atmospheric influences and fouling by dust and other impurities, and is transferred from the paste-cup to the cigar by the not always clean fingers of the cigarmaker.
- These caps are made of thin sheet metal or other material which is capable of being formed with hook-points to penetrate and hold to the wrapper of the cigar.
These caps also prevent abrasion of the ends of the cigars, confine the flavor and aroma of the tobacco, and supply a means of identifying each particular brand of cigar, or of the manufacturer, by having an appropriate trade-mark or firm-name stamped or printed on said caps.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metallic cap or cover for the ends of cigars, provided with arms a a, having pointed hook ends I) b, to penetrate the sides of the cigar and retain said cap in place, to prevent unwinding of the wrapper, 860.
2. A metallic cap or cover for the ends of cigars, formed of thin sheet metal, and provided with pointed barbs or hooks to penetrate and hold to the wrapper of the cigar, as
set forth.
