Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEDGWIOK M. WADE, OF ANDOVER, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, GEORGE J. RECORD, OF OONNEAUT, AND LYMAN LUOE, OF KINGSVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,697, dated September 3, 1878; application filed July 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEDGWIOK M. WADE, of Andover, in the; county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in a strap-hinge composed of two leaves having flanges and rear tongues, the latter curved to form sockets for the pivot, as hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing represents a hinge constructed according to my invention, Figure 1 being a face view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section taken in the line w a; of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The hinge is composed of two leaves, A A, which may be of the same general outline and conformation as the strap-hinges in ordinary use but the details of construction are different therefrom, as follows: Each leaf A has its two side edges near the joint end turned outward, at right angles to the main portion of its width, to form flanges a a, which have the effect of strengthening the leaves and lessenin g the liability of hen din g them, as the greater part of the strain wi 1 thus come edgewise of the metal.
Each leaf has its rear end provided with one or more tongues, 12, which are curved or bent to form sockets for the'reception of the pivot c, to form the hinge-joint. These tongues are bent outward or forward to a greater extent than has heretofore been done, so as to place the pivot 0 about midway of the width of the flanges a. By this means the joint is greatly strengthened, as the ends of the pivot e have their bearings in the ends of the flanges a a, and a portion of the strain of said joint comes edgewise on said flanges.
It is obvious that this invention is applicable to other forms of hinges as well as to straphinges.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim astnew and desire to secure by Letters Paten A strap-hinge having both leaves swaged up at the sides at right angles, and adapted to close one within the other, the rear portion of the flanges forming bearingsfor the pivot of the hinge, substantially as described.
