GEORGE A. llloFADDEN, OF JORDAN STATION, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,053, dated August. 13, 1878; application filed J one 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MOFADDEN, of Jordan Station, in the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in shirts; and it consists in attaching the bosom to the body upon only one side and across the bottom, and forming upon the upper loose corner a flap for passing over the shoulder and buttoning to the back.
It further consists in the peculiar construction that will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention a represents the body of the shirt, which may be of any construction preferred, and c the bosom. This bosom is somewhat narrower than generally made, and is of the usual length, but instead of being lined its whole length the lining reaches only about twothirds of the way down, and the balance is sin gle-ply.
Inside of the bosom, at the bottom, and at the two upper ends, on each side of the neck, are formed the three pockets d, into which the ends of the piece of pasteboarde catch. This pasteboard e is made in a single piece and just about the size of the lined portion of the bosom, and serves not only to keep the bosom from wrinkling, but the moisture of the body from coming in contact with the bosom. This bosom is sewed onto the body at one corner, next to the neck, down one side, and across the bottom of both the lined and unlined portions, but is not connected to the body on the other side, except from the bottom to the pocket d. Instead of the body of the shirt being cut away under the bosom, as is usual,
it extends straight across the chest, so as to form an additional thickness, 17, of material at this point, but is divided down the center, so as to make the opening for drawing the shirt on. This additional thickness of material forms, together with the pasteboard lining, a covering so warm and pleasant to the chest that an undershirt and all chest-protectors may be entirely dispensed with.
Secured to one of the upper corners of the bosom, and preferably the right one, is the extension or flap h, which is buttoned at l on the shoulder and at the two places 0 down the back. By thus forming the flap so as to wrap up over and around the shoulder all strain is taken from the bosom and the buttons that fasten it, and the shirt is made stronger and better in every way.
By means of the peculiar construction above described the bosom will not wrinkle, however much the wearer may bend down or work his arms. The shirt being closed behind, and the bosom so thoroughly protected in front, all under-shirts worn to absorb the perspiration in summer may be entirely dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a shirt, the combination of the body a, bosom a, connected thereto upon only one side and across the bottom, pockets d, to receive the lining e, flap h, and the material 1', made to project trom both sides and to meet under the center of the bosom, substantially as shown.
2. The bosom 0, having the extension or flap h, which extends over and around the shoul der, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of June, 1878.
GEORGE ABRAHAM MOFADDEN.
I'Vitnesses I Z. T. Roman, A. M. MoOoNNELL.
