PORTABLE FIREARM FOR FIRING BOMBS Filed July 15, 19 34 fitter? UNITED STAT Luigi Savani,
Italiana Erne PATENT OFFICE 2,068,821 PORTABLE FIREARM FOR FIRING BOMBS niche, Milano, Italy Application J 5 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in or modification of the invention claimed in the U. S.
Patent No. 1,816,265.
The parent patent is directed to a portable fire arm for firing bombs, wherein a quantity of explosion gases, variable from the barrel into the firing tube.
sultant fire arm enables the at will may be deviated The repower exerted on the bomb by the diverted gases to be varied at will within wide limits and consequently vary the distance the bomb is projected.
This is true in principle but become difiicult to set the in practice it may fire arm in such a manner that the bomb describes the necessary trajectory so as to hit the target as it is always necessary to fire in Also by reason of the a very elevated direction. considerable weight of the bombs the firearm gives a sharper recoil kick,
which cannot be borne by the marksman and is destructive to the weapon and to the accuracy of firing. It is necessary therefore to dampen the recoil.
An object of this invention coil or butt pad for a rifle.
is to provide a re- Another object of this invention is to provide a convertible recoil or butt pad for rifies which are convertible into bomb-proj A further object of this inve in a convertible firearm a able material mounted on ecting firearms. ntion is to provide wedge-like pad of plithe butt of the stock for pivotal movement about the center of said butt in a plane parallel to said butt so that the angle between the base of the pad and the axis of the barrel can be varied.
With these and other important objects in view, which may be incident to the invention resides in the improvements,
the parts and combinations to be hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements comprising the invention may be varied in construction, proportions without departing from the appended claims.
In order to make understood, there is shown in drawing means'for carrying the same tical effect without limiting in their and arrangement,
the spirit and scope of the invention more clearly the accompanying into practhe improvements useful applications to the particular constructions which, for the purposes of explanation, have been made the In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side subject of illustration.

ding to the present Milano, Italy, assignor to Societa sto Breda per Costruzioni Meccauly 13, 1934, Serial No. 735,033
Italy July 14, 1933 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a rifle equipped with a butt pad according to the present invention.
A convertible firearm l embodying the present invention is shown in the drawing. This firearm comprises a stock 2 and a barrel 3. The butt or end face of the stock lies in a plane inclined to the vertical when held in shoulder firing position as shown in Fig. 2. This inclination is greater than is the case of the usual shoulderfired gun, so that when the same is converted intoa bomb projector and. held with the butt on the ground in firing position, the butt will lie in a. plane less inclined to the ground than if it were inclined as in ordinary shoulder-fired guns.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a butt pad is mounted for movement about a central pivot 25 perpendicular to the end face of the stock. This butt pad, which is made of pliable material, is of wedge shape. The angle between the upper and lower faces of the butt pad is such that when the apex of the wedge-shaped pad is upward as shown in Fig. 2, the lower face of the pad will lie at an angle to the barrel of the gun best suited for shoulder firing. In this position, the pad, being of pliable material, serves to dampen or absorb the recoil of the gun and reduce the impact against the shoulder of the marksman.
On the contrary, when the butt pad is rotated about its pivot through an angle of 180 to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, the lower face of the pad lies in a plane substantially parallel to the ground or at about 45 to the axis of the barrel 3. In this position, the pad is best suited for stabilizing the gun when used as a bomb projector.
When the gun is to be used as a bomb projector, the detachable bomb-projecting tube 6 and the sighting apparatus 1 are assembled and the pad 4 is rotated to the position shown in Fig. 1. When the gun is to be fired from the shoulder, the pad is rotated, as hereinbef'ore explained, to the position shown in Fig. 2.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details herein set forth by way of illustration as it is apparent that many changes and variations may be made therein by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. In a convertible firearm of the character described having a stock and a barrel supported thereby, a wedge-like pad of pliable material mounted on the butt of the stock for pivotal movement about the center of said butt in a plane parallel to said butt so that the angle between the base of the pad and the axis of the barrel can be varied.
2. In a convertible firearm of the character described having a stock and a barrel supported thereby, a pad of pliant material having its upper surface inclined relatively to its bottom surface, and means for pivotally attaching said pad to the butt of the stock for movement in a plane parallel to said butt so that the angle between the axis of the barrel and the base or lower surface of the pad can be varied.
3. In a convertible firearm of the character described having a stock and a barrel supported by the stock, a wedge-like pad pivotally mounted on the butt of the stock for movement in a plane parallel to said butt so that the angle between the base of said pad and the axis of the barrel can be adjusted to fit the shoulder of a marksman when the firearm is used as a rifle and to properly engage the ground when the firearm is used to project bombs.
4. In a gun of the character described, having a barrel and a stock, said stock having its end face inclined so that it lies in a plane which intersects the axis of the barrel at an acute angle, a wedge-shaped recoil pad, and means for pivotally attaching said pad on the end face of the stock at a point intermediate the ends of said pad, whereby the pad can be pivoted about said attaching means through an angle of 180 to increase and decrease the angle between the face of said pad and the axis of the barrel.
5. In a gun of the character described, having a barrel and a stock, a wedge-shaped recoil pad, and. means intermediate the ends of said pad for pivotally mounting the same on the end face of said stock to provide for rotating said pad through an angle of 180 to vary the angle between the 20 face of the pad and the axis of the barrel.
