This invention relates to a novel and improved handkerchief holding device mountable on a bed.

One of the main objects of this invention is to provide a device whereby a handkerchief can be placed in a certain selected position on a bed, where it can always be found easily by the occupant of the bed, and where it is retained out of the way.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device for holding a handkerchief in a selected position on a bed, so that the handkerchief can be conveniently grasped and drawn several feet away from the holder into the desired position for use, and whereby it is thereupon automatically returned to its position of rest.

Another object of this invention is to provide such a handkerchief holding device which is mountable on a. bed, and is so constructed that it will normally remain in its proper shape and position, but is sufficiently yieldable to flex when accidentally bumped by a person, so that the person will not be injured and the bed will not be marred thereby.

Another object of this invention is to arrange the construction of this device in such a manner that the holding member with the handkerchief thereon is readily adjustable on the mounting means which is attached to the bed, to enable placing the handkerchief at the most convenient elevation and location with respect to the person in the bed, so as to place it out of the way and yet Within easy reach of the person.

A further object of this invention is to arrange the device so that it can be mounted on beds of various constructions, and in association with various forms of springs thereon.

These and various other objects and advantages are attained with this invention, as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein the invention is shown in its preferred form, it being understood that various other arrangements and forms of construction may be adopted for carrying out the objects and purposes of this invention.

The drawing discloses my invention in its preferred form of construction, which comprises holding means IE), adapted to hold a handkerchief I l, and means 82 for mounting said holding means it with the handkerchief in position on a bed i3, preferably so that the handkerchief depends alongside the mattress 14 of the bed, substantially as shown in the drawing. Said mounting means [2 preferably includes lower supporting means l5 which is supported on or is fastened to a member of the bed, and intermediate connecting means l6 which operatively connects the holding means Ill and handkerchief ll thereon with the supporting means 15, in such a manner that the handkerchief can be drawn from its position of rest, beside the mattress, for several feet across the bed, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

The supporting means 15 is preferably in the form of bracket means which comprises a supporting plate or bar 26 provided with a slot 2| therein, and a clamping member 22 which is bent at its intermediate part to provide two portions 23 and 24, which have their ends bent up to provide holding flanges 25 and 26, respectively. A hole or opening 21 is provided in said portion 2 3, and a bolt 28 is extended thru said opening 27 and thru slot 2| in plate 20, said plate 20 and member 22 being drawn together by operating a nut 29 on the bolt.

The bracket or supporting means [5 is adapted to be secured or clamped onto a member of the bed; for example, one of the main or outer bars 30 of a bedspring 3|, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. Plate 20 is supported on or rests upon said bar 30, and flange 25 of member 22 is pressed against the nether side of said bar 30, while flange 26 is pressed against the nether side of plate 23; thereby clamping the supporting bracket onto the spring bar 30, to mount the device on a bed of the type shown in Fig. 2.

This bracket or supporting means I5 is also this improved device on a different type of bed construction. For example, the type indicated in Fig. 'l of the drawing, wherein a bed 32 is provided with a boxspring 33 whereon the mattress 34 is mounted. With such an arrangement and bed construction the supporting plate 20 can readily be mounted and held in position by placing it between said boxspring 33 and the mattress 34 thereon, as shown in said Fig. '7, the clamping member 22 and the bolt 28 being then not required.

The handkerchief holding means It] may well comprise a fastener 35 of known construction, adapted to hold the handkerchief II in its restricted portion 35 at one end, and having a mounting eye 3'! at the opposite end.

The connecting means l6, which supports the holding means It] with the handkerchief Ill upon said supporting means l5, comprises flexible tubular means, which preferably consists of an outer tubular member or sleeve 38, and an inner tubular member or tube 39 which extends thru the outer member and is held therein with a tight fit, but is adapted to be adjusted therein. The tube can thus be adjusted with its upper end relative to the upper end of sleeve 38, for placing holder It] with handkerchief H at the most desirable elevation for the occupant of the bed. The outer member 38 is likewise mounted with a tight fit in an opening M provided in supporting plate 20, so as to normally remain therein but adapted to be withdrawn if desired.

The two tubular members 38 and 39 are preferably made of rubber material, and the outer member is sufliciently thick and rigid to retain its upright position beside the mattress under normal conditions. However, these two tubular members are arranged to be flexible, so that when a person accidentally bumps against this device it will yield and bend over, so that it will neither hurt the person nor break; and since they are of rubber, they are soft and pliable on the exterior surface, and will neither scratch the person nor mar the part of the bed when forced against the same.

A yieldable and extendible member M, an elastic cord, for example, is mounted within the tube 39, and has its lower end secured in a bellshaped holding element t2, which is mounted in the lower end of said tube, thus serving to hold the cord and also to close the lower end of the tube against entry of dust or foreign matter and prevent its upward movement thru the tube to the handkerchief. The upper end of said cord extends above the tube and is connected by means of a tab 13 to eye 3? of the holding means it, as shown in Fig. 4. This elastic cord 4| can thus be stretched and extended from tube 39, and the handkerchief H can be drawn from its place of rest for several feet over the bed for use, said cord automatically returning it when released.

The nut 29 on the mounting means I5 is preferably a wing-nut, so that it can be operated by hand, and the device can thus be readily mounted on and dismounted from and adjusted into the desired position on the bed.

I claim:

1. A hankerchief holding device comprising means for holding a handkerchief in position of rest adjacent the upper surface of a mattress, means adapted to be supported in position at the lower surface of the mattress, and means extending between and operatively connecting said two means, being adjustable for length to adjust its upper end relative to the mattress also being flexible and having its outer portion pliable, so as to yield if bumped by a person, to avoid injuring the person or marring the bed.

2. A handkerchief holding device comprising means for detachably fastening a handkerchief thereon, bracket means adapted to be fastened on a member on a bed, relatively long elastic means supported by and extending from said bracket means and being pliable to avoid injuring a person bumping against it and being adjustable for length, means connected to said handkerchief holding means and being extendibly connected with said elastic means, whereby the handkerchief is held in a conveniently reached but out-of-the-way position alongside the mattress and can be easily drawn a distance across the bed for use.

3-. A handkerchief holding device comprising means for holding a handkerchief, supporting means adapted to be held in position on a bed, a tubular member arising from said supporting means, a second tubular member mounted on the first said tubular member and being adjustable longitudinally thereon to place its upper end in a selected position relative to the mattress of the bed, and an. extensible member extending from the upper end of said second tubular member, being connected to said handkerchief holding means, whereby said handkerchief is placed in a conveniently reached position alongside the mattress and can be readily drawn over the bed for use, thereby extending the extensible member which automatically returns it to its position of rest when released.

4. The subject matter set forth in claim 3, wherein the tubular members and the extensible member are pliable and will flex and yield when bumped by a person, to avoid injuring the person or marring the bed.

5; A handkerchief holding device comprising means for holding a handkerchief, supporting means adapted to be held in place on a bed, a tubular supporting member arising from said supporting means, a tube extending thru said tubular member and mounted with a tight fit therein to be readily adjustable longitudinally thereof for placing its upper end in a selected position, relative to the mattress of the bed, and an extensible member mounted in and extendible from the upper end of said tube, having the handkerchief holding means secured to its upper end, whereby the handkerchief is placed at rest in a conveniently reached position alongside the mattress, to be readily drawn from said tube for use and to be automatically returned when released.

6. The subject matter set forth in claim 5, wherein the extensible member extends thru the tube and is provided with an element at its lower end which serves to fasten said end in position in the tube and also closes said lower end of the tube against entry of foreign matter.
