HENRY V. RAYMOND AND GEORGE H. OHINNOOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC DEVICES FOR ADVERTISING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,827, dated August G, 1878; application filed February 18, 1678.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY V. RAYMOND and GEORGE H. CHINNocK, of the city of Brooklyn, in Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Advertising, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists in the combination, with a vehicle, of an efiigy or movable figln'e of a washer-Woman, operated from the wheels or a wheel, and a receptacle for liquid, whereby the appearance of a woman at work washing is very closely simulated.
It also consists in a mechanism for transmitting motion fromy the wheels or a wheel to the efgy or movable ligure.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view and partial section ot' a wagon upon which is mounted an ef gy of a washer-wom an embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail View of part of the mechanism for operating the efiigies. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same in a different position, and Fig. 5 is a view of the opposite side of it and of a lever operated by it.
Similar letters of reference desi gnate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the body of a wagon, which may be of any suitable construction adapted to carry merchandise, such, for instance, as soap, and marked or embellished with an advertisement. Itis represented as having two axles, B B', but this is immaterial, so far as our invention is concerned.
Upon a platform, O, shown as extending across the wagon-body, are erected two tubs, D, adapted to contain liquid, and in proximity to them are two movable gures or efflgies of washer-women. These figures are composed of legs E, trunks or bodies Gr pivoted or hinged thereto at a., arms H pivoted to the bodies, and heads I connected to the bodies, so as to be capable of rotating or turning relatively thereto. Cords J or their equivalents connect the rear portions of the trunks or bodies G of the ef gies with a lever, K, mounted on a shaft, L, supported in stands I1, and operated by a cam, M, on a shaft, N.
Cords R connect bell-crank levers S attached to the arms of the efgies with a lever, T,
which is mounted on the shaft L, has an up turned end, and is operated by means of a cam, U, 011 the shaft N. (See particularly Fig. 5.) This cam is provided with a number of teeth or arms, c, which operate the lever T rapidly and eii'ect corresponding motions of the arms of the eftigies, and with a long circular portion, d, which will hold the said lever depressed for some time, and keep the arms of the eftigies stationary.
Through the depression ofthe levers K and T the bodies and arms of the effi gies are drawn back, and on the release of the levers the bodies and arms move forward by their own weight or by the action of springs.
The shaft N is rotated by means of a ratchet-wheel, Z, and pawls O P, carried by a lever, Q, mounted on a rock-shaft, V, oscillated by means of an arm, W, through a rod, X, and an eccentric, Y, which is rotated during the motion of' the vehicle, and preferably through one of the wheels. As the lever Q is vibrated one way the pawl O acts on the ratchet-whcel Z, and the pawl P rides over it; but when the lever is vibrated in the other direction the pawl l) operates the ratchet-wheel, and the pawl O plays over the teeth thereof. Suitable springs are employed to aetuate these pawls properly.
It will be seen that by our invention a very attractive advertising medium is provided, the receptacle for suds imparting a very natural appearance to the eftigy of the washer-woman.
7 hat we claim as our invention, and desire V'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a vehicle and an eftigy or figure of a washer-woman operated from the wheels or a wheel thereof, of areceptacle for liquid resembling awash-tub, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with an effigy or movable ligure, of levers K T, cords J, cords R, shaft N, cams M U, pawls O I), and ratchet Z, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
II. V. RAYMOND. GEO. Il. CHINNOCK.
