ROY BENJAMIN WEIKEL, 0F MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 23, 1911. Serial No. 616,301.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY BENJAMIN l/VEIKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a toy which is entertaining and amusing to children.
Another object is to provide a toy to represent the driver of a wagon chasing a boy hanging on behind.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description, but it will be' understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification; Figure 1 is a slde elevation of the toy. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same one of the figures being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a .topr plan view. Fig. 4 1s a transverse section on` the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but partly in section showing the figures in a different position. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings 10 represents the body of a toy wagon, 11 and 11', the front and rear axles respectively which carry the wheels 12. Arranged in the front of the wagon is the ligure of the driver 13, having one arrr 14 pivotally connected to his body at 15. In the pivoted arm the driver carries a whip 16, the pivot of the arm being formed with a cranked portion 17 which is connected to a cranked portion 18 in the front axle 11, so that the pivoted arm will move up and down in imitation of the cracking of a whip. Forming a part of the figure and extending below the feet is a tubular portion 19 on the lower end of which is a mutilated crown gear 20. Surrounding the tubular member 19 is a helical spring 21 one end of which is secured to the tubular member, and
the other to the wagon. On the front axle 11 is a mutilated gear 22 adapted to mesh with the gear 20 to cause the partial rotation of the figure representing the driver.
When said gears are in mesh, and the gure rotated, the driver will be turned t-o face the front of the wagon, the spring 21 thus being wound, and when the untoothed portions of the gears 20 and 22 are reached the spring will throw the driver aroundto face the rear of the wagon. A connecting link 18 between the arm of the driver and the axle passes vertically through the tubular member 19 and the figure, so that the arm will move up and down continuously. Thus when the driver is facing toward the front the movements of the whip will be intended for the horse, and when he is facing the rear it will be intended for the figure in the back which will now be described.
In the rear portion of the wagon are formed the two struck up perforated ears 23, in which is journaled a shaft 24 having a crank portion 25. On the rear axle 11 Patented Oct. 1,1912.
is a small gear 26 normally in mesh with to cause a rocking movement of the latter shaft. A figure of a boy 31 is arranged at the rear of the wagon and has the arms 32 pivoted at 33, while the hands are rigidly connected to the shaft 24. A spring 34 is turned several times around the shaft 24, and has one of its ends 35 bent laterally and inserted in an opening in one of the arms, while its opposite end is anchored to the wagon at 36. This spring is arranged so that it will be under tension when the figure is in either limit of its movement, thus retarding the rising and falling movement of the figure.
In the front of the wagon is provided a horse 37 suitably connected to the wagon.
In the operation of the toy the wagon is drawn across the door by any suitable means as a string attached to the horse. The gears in front will cause the driver to turn back and forth while at the same time the crank portion of the axle will cause him to crack his whip. The movements of the figure in the back of the wagon will be such that at times he will be lying partly within the Wagon and at times in an upright position as thoughy he Were running Vafter the vehicle.
From the foregoing it Will readily be seen that l have provided a simple, toy of this.
character, and one which is both entertaining and amusing.
What is claimed is:
1. A figure toy comprising a wagon, Wheels on the Wagon, a cranked axle at the front of the Wagon supporting the front Wheels, a figure of a driver in the front of the Wagon, the driver carrying a Whip, means Vbetween the said axle and the ligure for causing simultaneous reverse rotary movements of the figure and vertical movements of the Whip, a figure connected to the rear of the Wagon, connections between the rear figure and the rear axle of the Wagon for causing the said figure to assumea reclining position Within the Wagon, and an upright position at the rear of the Wagon, and means for retarding the movements of the rear figure.
2. A figure toy comprising a Wagon, Wheels on the Wagon, a cranked front axle supporting the front Wheels, a figure of a driver on the front of the Wagon, a mutilated crown gear on the front axle, a down- Wardly projecting extension on the figure, a mutilated plain gear on said extension, a Spring connected to the vvaffon and the extension, a pivoted arm on the figure carrying a Whip, a crank on the arm, a link connect-ing the crank of the arm and the axle, whereby the arm and Whip will be reciprocated continuously and the ligure reversely rotated intermittently, a figure pivoted at the rear of the Wagon reciprocating connections between the ligure and the rear axle,
whereby said rear figure will at times assume a horizontal position Within the Wagon, and at times an upright position at the rear thereof.
3. A figure toy comprising a Wagon, a {igure in front of the wagon, said ligure having a movable part carrying a Whip, means for simultaneously reciprocating said movable part and intermittently rotating said figure, a figure at the rear of the Wagon, and means for moving said figure into a reclining position into the Wagon and in an upright posit-ion at the rear thereof.
4. A figure toy comprising a Wagon having axles and Wheels, a rotatable ligure in the front of the Wagon, a mutilated gear on said figure, a gear on the front axle, meshing with said mutilated gear to causeV the intermittent rotary movement of said figure, a spring connected to said figure and to the Wagon for holding the figure in its normal position, a gear on the rear axle, a shaft adjacent the rear axle, a gear on said shaft in mesh With the iirst named gear, a ligure mounted in the rear of the Wagon, a crankportion in the latter mentioned sha-ft, a crank shaft mounted in the rear of the Wagon and connected to said ligure, a connecting rod between the cranked shafts, and a spring connected to the rear figure and to the Wagon, said rear figure being adapted to assume a reclining position in the rear of the Wagon at times, and an upright position at the rear of the Wagon at other times.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
