UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SOHW'IPPL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO STRASBURGER, PFEIFFER & (10., OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,391, dated October 23, 1877 application filed June 30, 1877. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ScnwIPPL, of Brooklyn, in the coimty of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gymnastic Automaton, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a toy constructed in imitation of the hum an form to some extent,
. up, imparts rotary motion, which, when the toy is set on the floor or a table, swings the arms down till they strike the surface on which it sits. They are then arrested and prevented from further rotation, so that the body is then thrown forward,'and the head brought down to the table and arrested by it, so that the further rotation of the shaft swings the body down on the back, and swings the arms over forward to the table again, which brings the figure up to a sitting posture, and so on, thus causing it to perform somersaults in an amusing manner.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in a sitting posture, ready for operation. Fig. 2
is a side elevation, showing the head thrown forward to the floor. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the body inverted on the head; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, showing the body thrown over on the back.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The arrows in the several figures indicate the motions.
A is the body containing the train, of which B is the shaft, on which the spring and the driving-wheel are arranged, said wheel and spring being indicated by the dotted lines 0.
D is the revolving shaft, which is geared with the driving-shaft by the pinion E. (Shown dotted.)
F represents the arms, which are keyed fast to shaft D. The hands are provided with a roller, G, on which they roll to some extent, and which sustain the shocks caused by striking the floor.
The legs H are jointed to the body at I, and
they are jointed together at J.
The spring is wound up by a key applied to the shaft B, and it is held by a ratchet and pawl, in the ordinary arrangement of such mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent-- An automatic figure consisting of the body A, provided with legs jointed at knee and thigh, a rigid head, a spring-shaft, B, and a JOHN SOHWIPPL.
