UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SOHWIPPL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO STRASBURGER, PFEIFFER 82; 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,046, dated October 9, 1877 application filed August 7, '1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SOHWIPPL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Toys, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my toy, containing my improve- Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the combination, with a hollow body representing a hare or other animal, of a transverse shaft extending through the forward part of said hollow body, and having legs or levers secured to its opposite ends, so as to revolve therewith, and of a clock-movement inclosed in the hollow body and gearing with said transverse shaft, so that when the clock-movement is set in motion the transverse shaft is revolved, and by this means the legs or levers secured thereto are brought in contact with the ground, or other thing on which the whole is placed, at regular intervals, and the hollow body is propelled forward with a leaping motion.
It also consists in a hollow body having one or more wheels mounted on its rear part, and having supporting-springs on the flont part thereof, in combination with the parts above enumerated, by which wheel and springs the motion of the body is greatly facilitated, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a hollow body, which, in the example shown, is made to represent a hare, but which may be made of any other form, and through the forward part of which extends a shaft, B, the ends of this shaft being made to project exteriorly of the body. To the opposite ends of the shaft B are secured levers O, which are made to form the front legs of the animal represented by the body A, and these levers or legs are preferably provided with toes a. On
the shaft B is mounted a pinion, b, which gears with one of the wheels of a clock-movement, D, which is of ordinary form, and is inclosed in the hollow body A.
When the clock-movement 1) is wound up and released, a revolving motion is imparted to the shaft B, while the levers or legs 0 partake of such motion, and thus are brought in contact with the ground at regular intervals, so as to propel the body A forward with a leaping motion.
()n the rear and lower part of the body A is arranged an axle, c, on which is mounted a wheel, E, and to the forward and lower part of said body are secured springs F. The object of the wheel E is to facilitate the propulsion of the body A, while by the springs F the front part of the body is held with an elastic pressure in an elevated position, so as to facilitate its being raised by the motion of the legs or lovers 0, while the springs also assist in producing the leaping motion of the body.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the hollow body A, of the transverse shaft B, having at its ends the levers G and an intermediate pinion, b, and a clock mechanism inclosed' in the body, is and he ving its gearing meshing with the pinion of the transverse shaft, the whole constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a hollow body, A, transverse shaft B, having on its ends the le- "ers C and an intermediate pinion, b, and a clock mechanism having its gearing meshing with the said pinion, of the supporting-springs F, secured to the lower forward part of the hollow body, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3d day of August, 1877.
JOHN SOHWIPPL. [L. s.]
