Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE` VILLIAM P. SHANNON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTLECOCKS.
Speeieation formixuJr part of Letters Patent N0. 206,689, dated Angust't, 187B application filed June 15, 1878.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM P. SHANNON, of the city of Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvelnent in Toys, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation with the shell in section, and Fig. 2 an elevation of the shell.
rl`he object of this invention is to construct a toy for the amusement and exercise of children and youth; and its nature consists in forming the shuttleoock hollow and bellmouthed, so as to be caught by and be discharged from a pointed stick or handle, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the shell; B, the handle g a, a swell or stop on the handle; b, an extension of the handle of smaller diameter, and c the feathers of the shell A.
The shell A may be made of metal or wood; but I prefer to make it of thin metal, as it is then less liable to injury in fallin It is made bell-mouthed, as shown, or has its lower end enlarged, for the purpose of increasing the opening for the admission of the part b of the handle. The upper end of the shell is suitably made for the reception and attachment of the feathers c. As shown, the feathers are fastened by inserting them in small holes; but when made of metal, loops or a band which can be bent against them may be used.
The handle B is made of wood, and prefer ably in the form shown but it is evident that the lower part may be of the size of the part or stop a.
The extension or shaft b is made as small as the strength of the material will admit.
The feathers c are of a size, number, orlength to keep the shell A in the desired position.
In operation, the shell is thrown from the handle, to be caught on it when it falls or returns, and it may be used by one person, or by two or more by throwing the shell from one to another.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The bell-mouthed shuttlecock or shell A, having the feathers c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ot' the shell A, having the feathers c, with the handle B, having the stop or shoulder l and extension or shaft b, substantially as described.
'ILLIAM I. SHANNON.
