The hair comb, according to this invention, comprises a frame casing Il! with an open end IIJ. A comb support I I is slidably mounted within the casing and is adapted to be extended from the open end I0. Resilient means in the form of a spring I2 is arranged within the casing and acts between the comb support and the rear of the casing for normally extending the comb. A catch I3 is provided for normally holding the comb support in its retracted position. A comb I4 is mounted upon the comb support and is adapted to be housed within the casing I0 when the latter is retracted, and to be extended from the casing when the comb support is in its extended position. l
The casing I0 has a small side compartment II)am in which the catch I3 is housed. The catch 5 comprises a catch element I31 pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends-at the point |31. 'I'he element I3'a has its rear end I 3c extended through an opening in the compartment |01-a by which it may be manually moved. A spring I31 acts 10 against the catch element so Aas to normally urge thefront end I3e thereof into operative position. This front end is adapted to engage a cutout portion IIa in the comb support II to hold the latter element in the retracted position.
The comb support II comprises an inverted U-shaped arm IIb connected with ,a base block IIC. The baseblock is of a shape so as to conform with the interior of the casing II) and so slidablysupport the comb support. The spring 20 I2 is of the spiral type and has one end thereof engaged upon a peg I5 mounted on the rear of the casing I0, and has its other end engaged Within a recess IId formed in the inner end of the comb support. 25
The side Walls of the casing I IJ'are formed with longitudinal bulged portions Il)a to accommodate the spring I2. 'Ihe spring I2 is restrained from completely ejecting the comb support by reason of small flanges Illb upon the open end 30 Ill' of the casing. These small flanges Illb are adapted to restrain the base I Ic of the comb sup- .port from being ejected. A pad I'I is mounted across the front of the base block IIc of the comb support so as to reduce to a minimum the noise 35 when the base block IIc strikes the anges Ib during the extension of the comb.
The comb I4 is formed with longitudinal grooves IIIa on the sides thereof. The free edges of the U-shaped arm portion I Ib of the comb support are turned inwards so as to engage these grooves to slidably support the comb. The comb may be removed from the U-shaped arm merely by sliding it from the front thereof. Thus, when the teeth of the comb break, a new one may be 45 substituted.
A means is provided for releasably holding the comb on the comb support. This means comprises a. keeper 20 having a portion of its rear edge formed into a coil 2lia engaged by a pintle 50 2I cooperating with a complementary coil upon the material of the arm IIb for hingedly supporting the keeper element. The keeper element is adapted to be engaged within an opening 22 formed in the side of the U-shaped arm. The 55 `i3 will engage the cutout Ila.
keeper element 20 is provided with a front lip 23 at right angles to the main portion thereof which extends into the space between the sides of the U-shaped arm and into a transverse groove lll'3 formed in the back edge of the comb to prevent the comb from moving longitudinally. The lip 23 is provided with an offset portion 23' coactable with a complementary offset portion on a iinger 24 stamped from the material of the U- shaped arm on the opposite side to the side on which the keeper 20 is located.
The keeper 20 may be manually opened by inserting a penknife or other small implement beneath an edge thereof and pivoting it outwards against the restraining action of the finger 24. The comb I4 may then be removed from the comb support. The same comb, or a new comb, may be placed upon the comb support and when the latter element is forced to its retracted position the keeper 20'(which is now open) will strike against the edge Ille of the casing l which will automatically force it into its closed position. If the comb M is not properly inserted in position it will be impossible to move the comb support inwards. It is therefore necessary for an operator to properly adjust the comb on the support. Once the keeper 20' is forced into the closed position vit will be maintained in this position by the finger 24.
The device is illustrated in Fig. 2 with the comb extended. In this condition it may be used for combing purposes. The comb may be forced to the retracted position by merely forcing the combl support inwards to a position in which the catch The device is then in the condition shown in Fig. 1. The comb may be extended whenever desired by merely pressing the end I3c of the catch element.
The device illustrated in Fig. 6 shows a catch I3 secured pivotally to the outside of the cas- The front end I3e of the catch is passing through an opening ID and is adapted to engage the cutout portion Ila in the comb support Il as previously described. The spring I3 is integral with catch I3 and tends to normally urge the front end I3e into operative position.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the Aprecise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A tonsorial device comprising a flat casing with an open end, a catch member on the said casing, inwardly extending flanges on the open end of the casing, a comb support arranged for reciprocation into and out of said casing consisting of a flange-abutting base block and an arm having a catch-engaging notch in the outer end, a comb rigidly mounted on said comb support, a normally compressed spring housed within said casing between the inner end of said comb support and the closed end of said casing, said catch being normally engaged in said notch, said spring being adapted to urge said comb out of said casing and retain the same in such position while said comb is being used.
2. A tonsorial device substantially as described in claim 1, said arm being substantially U-shaped in cross section and having portions of the stems y bent toward each other, said comb having longitudinal grooves and being disposed between said stems, said inwardly bent portions being disposed Within said grooves.
3. A tonsorial device comprising a flat casing with an open end, a catch member on the said casing, inwardly extending flanges on the open end of the casing, a comb support arranged for reciprocation into and out of said casing consisting of a. flange-abutting base block and an arm having a catch-engaging notch in the outer end,
a comb rigidly mounted on said comb support, a normally compressed spring housed within said casing between the inner end of said comb support and the closed end of said casing, said catch being normally engaged in said notch, said spring being adapted to urge said comb out of said casing and retain the same in such position While said comb is being used, said arm being substantially U-shaped in cross section and having portions of the stems bent toward each other, said comb having longitudinal 4grooves and being disposed between said stems, said inwardly bent portions being disposed within said grooves, and displaceable means disposed within said arm and cooperable with said comb from moving longitudinally with respect to said arm.
