Description

Dec. 15, 1936. H. RAFLOVICH HINGE CONSTRUCTION Filed May 24 35 44 I W TTOR Patented Dec. 15, 1936 UNITED STAES PAT Application May 24,
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to hinges construction and, in its preferred embodiments, which have been chosen for the purpose of description and illustration, relate to hinges, specifically, for composition toilet seats.
Among the objects of the invention is a hinge in which is embodied stop means acting to limit the lifting or opening movement of the seat.
Another object is to simplify the structure of such hinges and yet incorporate in them this additionally functioning means.
Still another object is hinge means that when installed is largely concealed but which includes bearing surface of somewhat greater area than that of the conventional hinge.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which 20 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a toilet bowl and seat showing a modified form of hinge.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 3.
Figure 2a is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the parts in another position,
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the hinge is shown as applied to a toilet seat, preferably of molded composition material. A rearwardly extending rectangular portion is shown at ma, which portion is shown as having a rod 32a embedded therein and extending a short distance from each side. This rod 32a forms the two pintles for the hinge, which includes the socket members $8, each of which is provided with a stud portion 4| adapted to extend through the bowl flange and 1935, Serial No. 23,139
then be secured by a nut as shown in Figure 1. Each of these socket members comprises a body portion 40 having a socket 42 therein to receive the end of the pintle and also comprises a laterally extending portion 43 which lies under the portion Mia; of the seat. This portion 13 coacts with the part Eta of the seat to form a stop against movement in one direction, the lower corner of the seat material being cut away and rounded as at M to permit movement in the directing of lifting or opening, but leaving the upper corner rectangular as at 45 to cooperate with the stop portion 4a.
The rod 32a may have small flanges pinched up on it as indicated at 45 to prevent rotation within the seat material.
Now, having described the invention and the preferred embodiments thereof, it is to be understood that said invention is to be limited, to the specific details herein set forth, but only by the scope of the claim which follows:
What I claim is:
In toilet seat construction including a bowl and a molded composition seat having a rearwardly extending rectangular portion, a metallic pintle member molded into said portion and projecting from the vertical side faces thereof, cooperating hinge members secured to the bowl and comprising pintile receiving body portions each having a laterally extending portion underlying the seat when the parts are in operative relation, said underlying portion being of sufficient height to act as a stop for the upper corner of said seat when the latter is in raised position, the lower corner being cut away to clear said under- 35 lying portion during relative movement.
