Patented sea; 7, iezo.
Application filed. April 23, 1920. Serial. No. 376,100.
Yb (/JZ whomit may concern. I
Be 1t known that I, LiARRY POUNDER, a
citizen of the United States, residin at Gallon, in'the county of Crawford and tate of @hio, have invented certain newand use ful Improvements in Hinges for Doors of Burial-Vaults; and I do declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same/ p This invention relates to an improved door hinge which is especially adapted for mounting doors of metallic burial vaults, although, it is not to be restricted to this use.
An object of the invention is to provide a hinge which is of such construction that it will permit the door to be swung through an approximate angle of 270 degrees, thus permitting the door to be swung upwardly and back on top of the vault so that it will take up less space and will be entirely out of the way.
i-inother object of the invention is to provide a hinge of the above mentioned type which s of such construction that it will I permit the door to be swung to the aforesaid position without damaging or interfering with the usual gasket between the door and the vault.
A further object of the invention is to generally improve upon the construction of a hinge by providing one of extreme simplicity one in which the hinge-plates are longitudinally adjustable, and one which is strong, durable and inexpensive to both the manufacturer and user.
Other objects and advantagesof the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description. 7 g
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same: I
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a conventional type of burial vault, equipped with my improved hinge.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. i is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane of the line 4-4: of Fig. 2, 1001;.
ing in the direction of the arrows.
in the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 des1g-' nates a conventional type of metallic burial the gasket.
vault with which my hinge is associated. Exam nation'of the showing of this vault will disclose the fact that the roof 2 projects beyond the front 3, and beneath this projecting portion of the roof is a rubber gasket or pack ngstrip 4 agalnst which the swinging door 5 closes. I While it is not clearly shown, it is to bennderstood that this 1. 4- L gasket extends entirely around the front or the vault near the edge so as to insure a tight joint between the door and the body of the vault. Under ordinary. circumstances, frequent opening and closing of the door damages and sometimes strips the gasket from place. This is one of the defectsof the hinges now in use, and is overcome by use of my hinge whirh is especially designed to prevent such an occurrence.
My hinge is composed of a hinge-plate 6 which-is provided with spaced, slotted lugs i. which when in position, extend beyond the end of the top 2 of the vault. Pivotally adj ustably connected with this plate 6 is a second hinge plate 8 wliich is secured to the door-5. This plate 8 is provided with a rigl1t angularly offset portion 9, on the extremity of which are spaced apertured lugs 10. A pivot bolt 11 extends through the lugs 7 and 10. Attention is directed to the fact that this pivot bolt is adjustable and in the slots of the lugs 7 It is the purpose of this construction to permit theplate 8 to headjusted longitudinally with respect to the plate 6 so as to accommodate difierent thicknesses of gaskets which are disposed between the door andthe body of the vault. As
shown. the pivot bolt 11 is arranged at one a the lugs 7. However,
end of the slots in should the gasket .4: be of a less thickness than that shown, it would be necessary'to move the plate 8 toward the front of the plate 8 with the offset 9, damage to the rub- 7 her gasket will be prevented. This is due to j to prevent the bolt from' moving. I particularly wish to emphasize the fact that by providing the swinging vault. This may be done by simply loosening the nut 12.
the fact that when the door 5 is swung upward, the edge thereof will swing'clearof The hinge plates 6 and 8 are secured to their. respective parts by means of rivets 13. 'I have-found from practicethat it is advantageousto fix these rivets in place other, the door may be brought into effective contact with various thicknesses of gaskets. It is to bestated here, that due to the constant pressure of the door on the gasket, the latter is compressed, conse quently, in order to provide an effective closure, it is necessary to move the door toward the body of the vault, which operation is permitted with my hinge. This is a very important feature. Then again, due to the offset hinge plate which I employ,
damaging of this gasket is obviated.
A careful consideration of the foregoing descr ption taken in connection wlth the accompanying drawings will enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to acquire a thorough understanding of the same, therefore, further description is deemed unnecessary.
While I have shown and described my hinge as being particularly adapted for use in connection with metallic burial vaults, I
desire it to be understood that it may be equallywell used for various other purposes.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a'preferred form of the same, and that various minor changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may
be resorted to without departing from the.
spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
I v A hinge for mounting closures on burial vaults comprising a hinge" plate provided with spaced slotted lugs, the slots being disposed in parallelism with the body of the plate, a second hinge plate including a right angular offset portion, on the free end of which is a knuckle, and a relatively fixed pivot member extending through said slotted lugs and knuckle, said member being in the form of ,a bolt which is adapted to be moved to various positions in the slots in the lugs and clamped by the nut in any position desired, whereby the closure may be adjusted to different positions and tightly contact packings of different thickness which are arranged between itself and the front of the vault.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY POUNDER.
