Description

J;. T. KENNEDY.
Bed-Bottom.
No. 205,871. Patented July 9,1878.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASQINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JESSE T. KENNEDY, OF ROOKVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPIROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,871., dated July 9, 1878; application filed May 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J EssE T. KENNEDY, of Rockville, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Duck Mattress for Bed-Bottoms and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable duck mattress for bed-bottoms, as will be hereinat'ter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents an ordinary bedstead, provided with a cleat, 13, along each side rail, on the inside, at or near the lower edge. On the cleats B B are placed two cross-bars, O G, at suitable distances from the ends of the bedstead. These cross-bars may be fastened to the cleats by any suitable means, or they may be simply laid loosely thereon, and in the ends of said cross-bars are made slots or mortises a. for the passage of straps b b, hereinafter described. 1) represents the canvas forming the bed-bottom, which is permanently secured to two side wings, G G, having their outer or lower edges rounded, as shown at m. The ends of the wings G are provided with metal straps d, and pins 0 project from the ends of the wings, at or near their inner or upper edges. At each end of the canvas D is a cross-bar, E, having notches in its ends, in which the pins 6 of the two wings are placed, to hold said wings the proper distance apart, and to form bearings in which the wings may turn on their pivots e. To the upper part of each wing G are attached the two leather straps b b, which pass downward through the slots aim the ends of the cross-bars G, and. are fastened on headed. pins 2', projecting from the under sides of said cross-bars. The lower rounded edges of the wings G rest on the said cross-bars C, and by turning the wings inward the canvas D is stretched more or less, as desired, and held by tightening up the straps b.
Instead of the headed pins i, buckles or other suitable fastenings may be used.
It will readily be seen that with this invention the canvas can be stretched and held as taut as desired, and at the same time the bedbottom can be easily and quicklyrernoved and rolled up for transportation in small compass.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bed-bottom, the combination of the canvas D, the pivoted wings G G, and the fastening-straps b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the canvas D, wings G G, with pivots e e, the notched cross-bars E E, straps b, and cross-bars O 0, having slots on and headed pins 1', or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of April, 187 7 JESSE T. KENNEDY.
