Description

L. TRABER.
v Bottoms for Beds.
No.155,998 Patented Oct. 13,1874.
Wilne ssea: J12 venZon I UNITED STATES PA ENT. Orrron.
LAFAYETTE TRABEB, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTOMS FOR BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,998, dated October 13, 1874; application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE TRADER, of Kansas City, county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottoms for Beds, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bed-bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my entire bedbottom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same through the line a: :20, Fig. 1'; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the device whereby the main bed-cord is prevented from coming loose, and by which the slack of the cord is firmly secured when taken up, when the cording or tightening is done.
A A represent the sides, and B B the end pieces, of a frame, which may either be or form a part of the bedstead, or be made separate, and attached in the same. To the inner sides of the side pieces A A, at or near one end, are attached brackets a a, in which is placed a cross-bar, 0, having in its inner edge a series of eye-screws, b b, fastened at regular and suitable intervals. In each of these eye-screws is attached a pulley, by means of a suitable clevis or loop. At the other end of the frame A B is placed a cross-shaft, D, in bearings formed in the side pieces A A. This shaft D is on one side provided with eyes or loops 0 e at suitable intervals. E represents a loose cross-bar, having pulleys d attached to it along one edge by means of eye-screws, said pulleys corresponding innumber and position with the eyes or loops 0 on the shaft D. Around the pulleys d, and through the eyes 6 is passed a cord, f, back and forth, as shown in Fig. 1, and the ends of said cord are tied together. Along the other or inner edge of the bar E are secured a number of small wiresprings, h h, each of which is made of a single piece of wire bent in the middle, and forming a coil on each side of the center, after which the ends of the wire are inserted through the bar, and clinched on the opposite edge. In the middle of each of the springs his attached a pulley, W, by means of a suitable clevis or loop. m represents the main bed-cord, one end of which is securely tied around the put ley at at one end of the bar 0, after which the cord is passed back and forth alternately around a pulley, d and a pulley, d. The last pulley around which the cord m passes has a toothed eccentric, i, pivoted in its clevis, which, by the tension of the cord, is drawn against it and the pulley, thereby holding the cord tightly, and preventing its slipping. Upon one end of the sh aft D is attached a cog-wheel, n, which gears with a worm upon a short vertical shaft, 19, arranged in suitable hearings on the inner side of one of the side pieces A. The upper end of the shaft 12 is made square, to fit the square barrel of a key, H, by means of which it is turned, but it may be turned by means of an ordinary wrench. The main bedcord m being passed around the pulleys d and d, as above described, it is tightened by hand as much as possible. The key H is then applied on the worm-shaft p, and turned, which revolves the shaft D, and, by means of the cord f, makes the whole bed bottom perfectly taut, and yet it retains sufiicient elasticity to make a perfectly easy and comfortable bedbottom.
It can readily be taken apart for shipment, and is durable, and not liable to get out of order.
If it should sag down by usage, it can very easily be tightened again.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The cross-bar E, provided with springs h h, and pulleys d 01 in combination with the cross-bar G, having pulleysd d, and the bedcord m, all substantially as and for the pur poses herein set forth.
2. The pulleys d al attached to the cross bar E, in combination with the shaft D, pro vided with eyes 6 e, and the cord f, passing around the pulleys and through the eyes, substant'ially as and for the purposes herein set 'forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my intention I hereunto affix my signature this 26th day of January, 1874.
LAFAYETTE TRABER.
