Description

BED-BOTTOM.
tannin-1142,1976.
WITNE 55 5 N. PETERS. PH0T0LI'IHOGRAPI'IERt WASHINGTON, D. G. V
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SMITH, OF MONROE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,0 [9, dated February 22, 1876; application filed February 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. SMITH, of Monroe, county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BedBottoms, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an elastic or spring bed-bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in whic h Figure 1 is a plan view of a bedstead with my bed-bottom attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end of one of the slats, with one of the clamps detached.
A represents a bedstead of any ordinary construction.
In the end pieces of the bedstead are fastened a series of hooks, a a, which hold a rod, 1), along each end piece. V
G 0 represent the bed-slats, provided at both ends with a loop, D, made of a piece of strong elastic webbing. The webbing is placed over the end of the slat, the ends of the webbing being flat on the top and bottom of the slat, and fastened by means of clamps. Each clamp consists of a staple, d, placed over' the Webbing on one side of the slat, the ends of the stapleforced through the slat to project on the other side thereof. On these projecting ends of the staple is placed a metal bar or plate, h, after which the ends of the staple are clinched or riveted, so that the staple or bar will hold the webbing firmly Without liability of slipping. Two of these clamps are preferably used at each end of each slat, in. reversed position, as represented in the drawing.
The rods b are passed through the loops D D thus formed, and then placed in the hooks a a, thus uniting the slats to the bedstead. The slats can easily be attached and detached as required, and the entire bed-bottom can be manufactured at a very small expense.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by.
Letters Patent, is-
The slat G, having the elastic band D over each end, and fastened thereto by staples d passing through the slot, and having bar h on under side, in combination with the bedsteadframe, provided with hooks I) and with rods a, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionl hereunto affix my signature.
' JOHN W. SMITH. WVitnesses S. W. ABBOTT, W. V. HARDING.
