Description

E STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,830, dated August 8,1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY TRIP- HAGEN, of Pewamo, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a slat attached to the head or foot-rail of a bedstead by my improved method. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a slat and attachments. Fig. 3 shows in perspective the method of' securing the ends of the elastic webbing-loops to the clamps and the latter to the Slat-clips. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one ofthe Slat-clips. Fig. 5 is a plan ot a slat end, and Fig. 6 is a plan of the loopclamps.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of spring bed-bottoms wherein the desired elasticity is obtained by su spendin g the slats from the end or side rails of the bedstead by means ot' elastic webbing-loops; and it consists in the peculiar devices for attaching the ends of said loops to the slats, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the end of a bedslat, in which are sawn two vertical slots, a, for the reception oi' the shank or web portion otA the clip B, cast in the form shown in Fig. 4, the top part ot' which bears 011 the under side-and supports the slat when in use, being inverted from the positions shown in Figs. 3 and 4L. C is a head or foot-rail of the bedstead, to which are secured as many of the cast brackets D as there are slats. E is a strip of velastic webbing engagin gl with the cross-bar of the bracket, and has its en ds secured between the clamps F F in the following manner: The bar F has cast on one side and edge a series of lateral studs, b, which are received in corresponding notches or recesses in the bar F, the studs passing through the webbing interposed between the bars, the ends of which are received in the sockets c formed on the clips B, which are then inserted in vthe slots a at the ends of the slats, .as shown in Fig. l, when the ,attachment is complete.
The castings are light and cheap, easy of application, durable, and noiseless in use, and
readily removed to replace the webbing when required.
I am well aware that the suspension of bedslats from the end or side rails by means of elastic webbing is not new; and while I disclaim the invention thereof,
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe clips B, clamps F and F', the elastic loops E, and the slats A of a bedbottom, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown, for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES HENRY TRIPHAGEN.
