BED-SLAT SUPPORT.

Be it known that I, GEORGE LUPPERT, residing at VVilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Slat Supports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to spring supports for bed slats, and it has for its object to provide a support of this character in which the slats can be quickly placed in position, in which their displacement is almost entirely avoided and in which the resilient properties of the springs are much more uniformly distributed over the entire bottom.

It has also for its object to provide a cheap, and simple support, easily manufactured and adapted to be quickly secured to the bed rails.

To these ends my invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts all of which will hereinafter be fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a bedstead with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the spring supports detached.

Referring to the accompanying drawings A indicates one of the side rails; B and O a portion of the head and foot boards respect ively.

D indicatesa slat supporting bar, which is held in a series of spring supports E, the construction of which is most clearly shown in Fig. 2, by reference to which it will be seen each of such supports is formed of a single piece of stout wire bent to form a wide bail, each arm'e of which is formed with a coil portion e, and a straight end e terminating in a hook portion a It will also be noticed by reference to said figure that the coil portion of one arm terminates in a straight portion e extending down from the front of the coil while the opposite coil has a straight member e projected down from the rear, and such members 6 e are joined by a diagonally extending horizontal arm a. These supports are secured to the side rails A at suitable intervals, by having their hooked ends made to enter such rails, and held in place by the staples a a. By forming the spring supports as described, it is obvious that as the bar D is slid into place on such supports, the portions e e of each bail will project on opposite sides of such bar, and thereby hold the said bar from lateral movement, and form a simple, effective and strong support for such bar. Furthermore the arrangement of such supports E allows the bar D to be quickly and firmly attached to the supports, and also allows of its quick detachment when the head or foot board is removed. It is manifest that by supporting the bar on a number of spring supports as described, no too great a strain can be imposed on any one set of supports E.

While I prefer the construction shown and described, I may however in some instances dispense with the bar and support each slat directly on the supports E.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an improvement in bed slat supports, the combinationwith the side railA and end boards B and C, of a series of supporting bails E, each having a pair of upwardly extending arms, secured at their upper ends to the side rails, such arms having horizontal coiled portions, and projected from the side of rail A at difierent planes whereby their horizontal or supporting bar will extend diagonally from the said rail, and the detachable supporting bar D, held on such diagonally extended bail portions, and between the side arms of the bails all substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. As an improvement in bed slat supports, the combination with the side rail A, and the end boards B and C, of a series of supporting bails E, each of which consists of side arms having hook portions at their upper ends, and formed with horizontal spring coils e, the lower coil at one side terminating in a downwardly extending straight member 6 projected at the front edge of the coil e, the other coil terminating in a straight portion e projected down from the rear edge of its coil, said portions e e joined by the diagoand such bar held from lateral displacement nally extending horizontal arm a", and the by the side portions e e as set forth. supporting bar D held on such arm e between the members 6 a all arranged sub- GEORGE LUPPERF' stantially as shown whereby the said bar D Witnesses:
