To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MELLON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress- Guards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this saecification.

My invention relates to a device independent of a bedstead or bed bottom, and adapted to be removably mounted upon the bed bottom for the purpose of maintaining the mattress above said bed bottom in its proper position, and to preserve the shape of the mattress. The improvement may also perform other services hereinafter referred to- Figure I is a perspective view illustrating a plurality of my attachments as they ap pear in service. Fig. 11 is a perspective view of one attachment.

In the accompanying drawings: B designates a bedstead, C a bed bottom supported by the bedstead, and D a mattress resting on the bed bottom. Bed bottoms as universally made have level flat surfaces and the mattresses placed thereon are very susceptible of being shifted on the bed bottom so that unless care is taken in making up a bed, the mattress will not occupy its proper position on the bed bottom, and the made up bed will not have a pleasing appearance. Furthermore, mattresses after being used for a short time, become misshapen due to the pressure exerted upon them by the occupants of the bed. My attachment is one intended for use to maintain the mattress in its proper position on the bed bottom, and also prevent the mattress from becoming mis shapen, the latter result being acquired due to the attachment engaging the vertical edges of the mattress.

A designates my attachments which are of loop form, each attachment is formed in one piece so as to avoid projections comprising side arms 1, uprights 2, extending upwardly from the front ends of the side arms, and a cross piece 3, connecting the upper ends of said uprights. The attachments are preferably made of wire of a suitable gage to afford requisite strength in the attachments according to the services they are to perform. The side arms 1 are provided at their rear ends with snap hooks 1 which, as

shown in the drawings, are formed integral with the side arms and by return bends of the arms. These snap hooks are so formed as to provide eyes therein and the disposal of the free ends of the hooks in proximity to the bodies of the side arms, in order that when the snap hooks are applied to a member of the bed bottom that receives the herein described attachment, such receiving member will be confined within the hooks and the attachment, therefore, secured to the member in a manner to prevent its displacement on the bed bottom. The provision of the snap hooks makes it possible for my attachment to be applied to the various types of bed bottoms, including link fabric bed bottoms, woven wire bed bottoms, and coil spring bed bottoms, inasmuch as the hooks of the attachment may be readily applied to any and all such types. They also make it possible to apply the attachment to the bed bottoms, irrespertive of various sizes of wires entering into the structures, inasmuch as the snap hooks may be provided with eyes of a sufficient size to be applied to the largest wires, which will be confined within the hooks in the same manner as smaller wires are confined therein.

Another import-ant advantage in my attachment is its adaptability to various positions on the surface of the bed bottom so that it may be placed inwardly from the edge of the bed bottom in instances where the mattresses resting on the latter is of less dimensions than the bed bottom.

The construction of my attachment provides for the hinging of the attachment to a bed bottom in such manner as to permitthe attachment to swing upwardly with a mattress in the act of making up a bed, in order that the bed clothes may be tucked beneath the mattress, as is universally desired,

In placingmy attachments in position for service, their side arms are laid horizontally on the bed bottom, and the hooks 1 are engaged with the bed bottom for the purpose of preventing the movement of the uprights 2 of the attachments away from the edges of the mattress. \Vhen the attachments are arranged with their side arms located as stated, the uprights 2 and cross pieces of the attachments occupy positions at the sides and ends of the bed bottom to furnish a series of guards bounding the space into which the mattress D is to fit. Consequently, when the mattress is laid upon the bed bottom, its edges will be confined between the uprights and cross pieces of the attachments A, and said attachments will serve to prevent slippage of the mattress in any direction, and also act to preserve the shape of the mattress.

The attachments A may be very easily interlocked with the bed bottom, and as they do not form a part of the bed bottom and are not permanently connected to the bed structure, they may be delivered to the user separate from the bed bottom to be readily applied thereto. The attachments A at the head of the bed extend above the mattress to serve as means for holding mosquito netting above the level of the bed. The attachments A at the foot of the bed. extend above the mattress and have their upper ends bent inwardly to constitute supports for a roll of bed clothes.

I claim l. A mattress guard having a horizontal portion provided with means at its inner end for hinging it' to a bed bottom, and having an upright portion adapted to engage the edge of a mattress and to 'move upwardly therewith.

2. A mattress guard in the form of a wire loop having an upturned portion adapted to engage the edge of a mattress and to move upwardly therewith, and a horizontal portion adapted to lie on a bed bottom beneath the mattress, and return bend hooks at the inner end of said horizontal portion adapted to connect with the bed bottom and to hinge the guard thereto.

3. A mattress guardin the form of a wire loop having an upturned portion adapted to engage the edge of a mattress and to move upwardly therewith, and substantially horizontal arms extending inwardly from said u-pturned portion and adapted to lie on a bed bottom, said arms being provided with return bend hooks adapted to connect the attachment to the bed bottom and to hinge the guard there-to.
