IMPROVEMENTUIN CARRIAGE-SEATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,891, dated J nne 1-, H79;

application filed November 21, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DUDLEY EVANS GALE, of Salisbury, in the county of Essex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and more expeditious method of operating the seats in a vehicle known as the J ump-Seat Carriage and I do hereby declarethe followin g to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. V

The nature of my invention consists in connecting the front iron rods used in operating the back seat with the back leg or brace to the front seat, by arod of iron or other metal, in such a manner that by operating the back seat in the usual manner the front seat is also forced into position.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical section of my seats, A represents the body of a box-buggy; but my invention can be applied to a standingtop carriage as well. B is the rear or jump seat. The top ends of two rods or arms, 0 O, are pivoted to this seat, and the lower ends of said rods or arms are pivoted to the inside of the carriage-body, allowing the seat to be placed on the back part of the body or over the center thereof, according as a front seat is required or not.

' I construct the front operati n g-rod G crooked, as shown in the drawings, in order that if a door is required to the carriage the said rod or arm will not be in the way, and of sufficient length below the pivot to raise or lower the front seat the distance required to place it in position by means of the curved connectingrod E, said rod being pivoted to the said rod or arm 0, and also to the back leg or brace of the front seat (marked F) at the joint to. The frontleg(marked G) is constructed with a mortise at b, in which is pivoted the said back leg or brace, said back legs or braces being connected together by the rod H.

When both seats are in use, and only one is required, the back seat is raised and moved forward in the usual manner. During this movement of the back seat the front seat is drawn backward and downward by means of the rods 0 and E, forcing backward the joint to. In like manner, when the back seat is raised and moved backward the movement will force the front seat into position, thus forming a combination which operates both seats with ease and simplicity, and by one movement.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The front seat constructed with the jointed back leg F, in combination with the back seat provided with the pivoted legs 0 and G, the legs 0 extended below the pivotal point, and connected to said leg F of the frontseat by the curved rod E, all being combined to operate substantially as described.
