No. 296,045.- 'Patented Apr. 1.18.84.

JAMES C. OLIVER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
- BUGGY-TO P.
PBCIFICATION forming' part of LettersPatent No. 296,045, dated April 1, 1884.
Application filed January 16, 1884. (No model.)
i To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. OLIVER, a
` citizen of the United States, residing at Louisvillain the county of Jeiferson and `Sta-te of j Kentucky, have invented certain new and use- `ful Improvements `in Buggy-Tops, of which i. thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 4
My invention' relates to certain new and j `l useful improvements in buggy-tops; and it consists 1n arranging said top in such a manl ner that the front may be extended at will t without moving the upright bows, and providing for the ingress and egress to the buggy without the interference of the upright bows;
Y1 l o buggy-top that is light and durable, construct- Aand it further cons istsin dispensing with two -l or more bows usually employed orusedin an ordinary buggy-top, and using` only two bows. The object of my invention is to provide a ed with only two upright bows, and yet display the same or more cover-surface `to prof j tect from storm and sun; second, to construct 25 a top that will permit the occupant yto get in or out of the buggy without the inconvenience `of the slanting front bow usually found in ordinary buggy-tops third, to form a top that will fold back, that will present a neat and compact appearance, that will ride with little` or no wear, andpresent but little surface for resistance against the wind or the forward `movement of the buggy. I attain these objects by means of the peculiar construction and various arrangements of the parts, which will be more fully pointed out and described in the specication and claim, reference being `had to the drawings accompanying this api j `plication and'forming part of the same, in`
whichj f Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, showing the top extended. Fig. 2` is a side elevation, showing the front joint bent and the front bow pressed back against the nl Referring -to the drawings, A represents my v formed of'curved cross-slats a, a', and a, the
front crossLslat, a, being held at right angles to the slat a by means of connecting-braces a, one end of which is attached to slat a, and the opposite -ends to said front curve slat, ct.` Slat a is setin front of slat en and the ends are perforated at the points where said ends cross the ends of slat a, which is also perforated to receive apiVot-bolt, b', on which one end of j oint II is pivoted, as shown in Fig. 2, said jointbeing formed to bend upward by means of its central joint, the opposite .end of joints H being pivoted at points near the top of bow D. One end of the joints I is also pivoted at the same point, and their opposite ends are pivoted at G to the back of seat B. Two joints, J, that operate the hood or extension C, are secured by their ends to slat a and bow E in such a manner, .l as'shown in Figs. 2. 3, and 4, that the hood G will be extended whenthe joints II and .I are extended,`or when the joints II are bent upward in the center. When the joints II are bent upward and the joints I are bent backward, the top is closed down on the seat, as shown at Fig; 8, and at the same time the hood, by means of the joints J, if desired, is folded down onto the bow E, as shown in Fig. 4. A back projecting bow or slat, b, is fitted in at right angles with bow D, and is connected by its ends to the same bolt or pivot-pin that holds the ends of joints H and I, and the outer surface of the bows and extensions is covered with stays and leather or enameled cloth in the usual manner, making a cheap and durable top; also, one
Having described niy invention, what I parts being` constructed substantially as shown7 Claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, for the purpose set forth. 1o is- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in l In a buggy-top, 'the hood provided with the presence of two witnesses.
5 extension-joints .I and curved slats a, ct, and JAMES C. GLIVER.
a, substantially as shown, in Combination with x Vitnesses: the pivoted flexible joints H and I7 the pivot- I' M. RABBETH, ed bows D and E, and rear extension7 b, the HARRY JOINT.
