Description

' July 21, 1936. 1 G. M. P. YERKES BRASS IERE Filed D90. 11, 1935 INVENTOR %M iv. AM
ATTO RN EYS Patented July 21, 1936 omcs . BRASSIERE Gabrielle M. P. Yerkes, Hartman. Y; 'assignor to G. M. Poix, Inc., tion of New York Application December New York; N. Y.,' a corpora- 1, 1935 Serial Nb. 53,837
7 9 Claims. (oi."2j- 42) Theobject of my inventionisto provide novel means for effectively preventing the flesh of the wearer from bulging over the top of the girdle or corset when the brassiere is used in connection therewith, said means comprising an elastic portion which extends entirely across the inner face of the back portion of the brassiere from side to side thereof and which is attached only at the middle and sides of the said back portion.
My invention more particularly comprises a brassire of the above type in which the elastic portion consists of upper and lower elastic cross bands which preferably overlap and which are not only secured to the sides and middle of the back portion but also are secured to each other at points therebetween, the lower cross band extending substantially straight across the back portion and the upper cross band extending diagonally upward from the middle to the sides of the said back portion.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 represents a rear perspective view of the brassiere as in use;
Fig. 2 represents an inside view of the brassiere; and
Fig. 3 represents a Vertical section taken in the plane of the line IIL-III of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The front or breast portion of the brassiere is denoted by l and the back portion thereof by 2. The free side of the front portion and the free side of the back portion are provided with coacting fastening devices such, for instance, as
rows of hooks 3 and eyes 4.
The sides and middle of the back portion 2 are provided with vertically disposed reinforcing strips 5, 6 and 1 extending from the top to the bottom of the garment. The back portion 2 may also be provided with elastic gores 8 and 9 extending upwardly from the bottom of the garment at the sides of the back portion.
The brassiere may be provided with a pair of shoulder straps Ill and H connecting the tops of the front and back portions.
The means which I have shown for preventing the bulging of the flesh of the wearer over the top of the girdle or corset when the brassiere is used in connection therewith, comprises the following elements:
The elastic portion which consists of upper and lower elastic bands I2 and [3 of considerable width extends across the back portion 2 of the .brassire, which bands are secured only at the side and middle reinforcing strips 5, 6 and] of the back portion. The lower elastic cross band 13 extends substantially straight across the back portion 2 of the brassiere near its bottom edge and the upper elastic band overlaps the lower band and extends diagonally upward from the middle reinforcing strip 1 to the side reinforcing strips 5' and 6. These elastic cross bands overlap to a considerable extent at themiddle reinforcing strip and gradually decrease the overlap as they extend outwardly to the side reinforcing strips. These overlapping cross bands are preferably secured together at points between the side strips and middle strip as indicated at M, I5, to keep the bands in proper adjustment with respect to the body of the wearer when the brassiere is in use. The action of these elastic bands is to confine the flesh of the wearer within the bounds of the brassiere, thus preventing the bulging of the flesh over the top of the girdle or corset.
It is evident that 'various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. In a side opening brassiere, front and back portions, and a separate elastic portion extending entirely across the inner face of the back portion from the opposite sides of the brassire.
2. In a side opening brassiere, front and back portions, and a separate elastic portion extending entirely across the inner face of the back portion from the opposite sides of the brassiere and secured to the brassiere only at the middle and sides of the back portion.
3. In a side opening brassiere, front and back portions, and separate upper and lower elastic bands extending entirely across the inner face of the back portion from the opposite sides of the brassiere.
4. In a side opening brassire, front and back portions and separate upper and lower elastic bands extending entirely across the inner face of the back portion from the opposite sides of the brassire, one elastic band extending substantially straight across the back portion and the other elastic band extending diagonally upward from the middle to the sides of the back portion.
5. In a side opening brassiere, front and back portions, and separate upper and lower elastic bands extending entirely across the inner face of 5 the back portion from the opposite sides'of the brassiere, the lower elastic band extending substantially straight across the back portion and the upper elastic bandextending diagonally up. ward from the middle to the sides of the back portion. 7 V V 6.'In a side opening brassiere, front and back 'portions, and separateupper'and lower elastic 7 bands extending entirely across the inner face of the back portion from'the opposite sides of 'the brassiere, said elastic bands being secured to the brassiere'only at the middle and sides of the back 7 portion.
7. In aside opening brassiere, front andback portions, and separate upper and Ilower. elastic bands'extendin'g entirely across the'inner-face of the back portion from the opposite sides of the i brassiere, said elastic bands being secured to the brassiere only at the middle and sides of the back portion and also to each other at intermediate points;

8. In a side opening brassire, front and back portions, vertically disposed reinforcing strips along the middle and sides of the' back portion,-
and separate upper and lower overlapping elastic bands extending entirely across the inner'face of the back portion from the opposite sides of the said middle and side reinforcing strips; V
9. Ina side opening brassiere, front and back portions; vertically disposed reinforcing strips along the middle and sides of the back portion,
and separate upper and lower'overlapping elastic bands extending entirely across the inner dle strip to the side strips. 7 r VIGABRIEVLLE P. YERKns.
