(Cl. 2-42) The object of the present invention is to provide a brassiere which, without the use of bones, wires, or the provisions of slings within the cup, will provide fully adequate and comfortable support and to the same extent as in the case of brassieres provided with sling-like elements adapted to under-breast contact.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation showing an embodiment of the invention;

Fig. 2 is a view of said embodiment in rear elevation, and, like Fig. 1, being partly broken away;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 33 (Fig.2).

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my brassiere consists of a pair of cups 1 each having its own independent base frame, constructed in a special manner as follows: each base frame consists of two fabric pieces, one piece, 2, being on the outside of the garment, and the second piece, 2x, being on the inside of the garment. Each piece 2 has a bottom and outer side substantially straight edge, an upper margin which is curved to conform with the curvature of the cup, and the inner area rises from the bottom of the brassiere in a curve which terminates at a V between the cups.

A special feature of each of the two frame members appurtenant to a cup is such formation of each upper margin as to provide a welt. Thus the curved upper margin of each frame member may be folded back upon itself, the cup margin laid upon or inserted between the thus inwardly folded curved top areas of frame members 2, 2x, and stitched down by the stitching 3. Also a tape, not shown, may be applied.

Before the innermost curved margin of each base frame member assembly'is stitched to a jointure for the two, the members 2 and 2x are folded inwardly at their margins and a wedge-shaped elastic member 4 is inserted and stitched down by the stitching at 5. Thus each outer margin of the wedge-shaped member 4, at the sides thereof, is bounded by a reinforcing welt.

At the horizontal approximately medial point of each cup at the general area where the two cups are joined by member 4 is stitched in one end of a fabric loop 6. The opposite end of this loop carries elastic pieces 7 stitched down to the welt at the outer end thereof close to the seam at 8 which joins frame member 2 to back band 9, this construction being the same as to each base frame and back band.

Each loop 6 is passed through the lower reception end of a buckle 10 which adjustably receives one end of a shoulder strap 11, the opposite end of which is stitched 2 to the top of back band 9, this arrangement being the same for the loop of each cup.

It will be noted that when the garment is at rest, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bottom line of the garment is not straight, but to the right and left of the vertical center of elastic member 4 the bottom line extends angularly of a true horizontal line. Thus when the garment is placed in position for wearing and the back bands 9 are connected in the usual manner by hooks and eyes (not shown) the elastic member 4 will yield until the two halves of the garment are in a straight line at their base margin, and this will bring the welts 3x between the spaced lines of stitches 3 therefor firmly under and in comfortable support for the busts.

When the garment is worn the loop 6 and shoulder strap 11 applied thereto will, as to each cup, transmit lifting support through the welt 3x, and at the same time because of the fact that each loop overhangs the top of its appropriate cup and each buckle 10 is preferably secured to the top of its appropriate cup by a member shown in Fig. 2 at 12, each cup will not only snugly encompass the base of the bust but the cup will closely conform to the upper portion of the bust without gap.

It will be understood that modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim is as follows:

A brassiere comprising a pair of cups, two independent base frame members, one for each cup, and each frame member consisting of two fabric pieces, one piece being on the outside of the garment and the second piece being on the inside of the garment, each frame member having a bottom and outer side substantially straight edged and having an inner margin which is curved to conform with the curvature of the cup, the inner area of each frame member rising from the bottom of the brassiere in a curve which terminates at an inverted V formation between and above the median line of the cups, the two frame members being joined by an elastic member of inverted V-shape and which rises to the tops of the frame members at their inner ends, the inner top areas of the two frame members being mutually adjacent and forming stiffening lateral boundaries for hinging of the elastic inverted V-shape member between them, a loop for each cup exteriorly thereof, one end of the loop being connected to its appropriate frame member at the inner approximate horizontal medial line of the cup, and the opposite end of the loop being secured to the appropriate frame member 'at the outer end thereof and substantially below the horizontal medial line of the cup by means of an elastic component, and a shoulder strap for each loop in combination with a connecting member therefor at the upper end of the appropriate cup.
